[SOLVED] Install software in Jessie from any Debian based live media

Cannot connect to the Internet from my Debian minimal (with OpenBox) after i butchered my network. Saw lots of upgradable firmware in synaptic and also need to reinstall NetworkManager, maybe that's why i can't. Have a LMDE live persistent usb and also another LMDE partition on the same machine with connectivity. Would someone please tell me how to go about it?

I just thought of uncommenting the deb CDRom in my sources.list and plugging in the NetInstall usb to reinstall NetworkManager. But my question still stands regarding updating, upgrading and installing software from a live medium. Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Install software in Jessie from any Debian based live media

You can chroot into your system from a Live session, then do whatever you need to do. Here is a HowTo (but I don't know enough to say if you would get connectivity).

Another option which occurs to me is to download any debs you need, from the Live session, and save them to disc (or copy them across from your other partition). Then install them after you have re-booted.

The debs may also still be in /var/cache/apt/archives:

sudo dpkg -i /var/cache/apt/archives/package-name.deb

Re: [SOLVED] Install software in Jessie from any Debian based live media

Thanks a lot, that's a very handy how-to and i have bookmarked it. I have a common EFI boot partition that is shared between LMDE and Debian, and separate / and /home partitions.

a) Will using the live usb of any other 64 bit OS, or Debian's NetInstall usb in rescue mode do, because i don't have debian live?
b) Would you please confirm if i have understood the commands i have to run  after booting with it correctly?

sudo su
TARGET=/media/sda3 #sda3 is my root partition
mkdir -p $TARGET
mount /dev/sda3 $TARGET
mount --bind /dev     $TARGET/dev
mount --bind /dev/pts $TARGET/dev/pts
mount --bind /proc    $TARGET/proc
mount --bind /sys     $TARGET/sys
cp /etc/resolv.conf    $TARGET/etc/
chroot $TARGET /bin/bash

Later, if i  manage to get this far without errors ;

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install network-manager

Then i get out of the chroot and reboot as in the guide.
Have i got this right?

Also came across this today but i am not very clear yet on how to use it. http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=15351.

Probably, as long as the relevant commands are available

I can't say if you have understood them or not! But it looks OK (although as I said, I don't know about connectivity). You shouldn't need a connection if you use dpkg to reinstall the relevant packages though.

That is the same link as the HowTo I posted

Re: [SOLVED] Install software in Jessie from any Debian based live media

Yaba-daba-doo! That's one heck of a versatile how-to. D

Had a problem initially with

cp /etc/resolv.conf    $TARGET/etc/

Then remembered i had to

rm /etc/resolv.conf && touch /etc/resolv.conf

Rebooted into the Debian installer after doing that, the rest was smooth sailing. Thank you so much, this chroot thing is really awesome!
