i perceive some sort of leap here - there's the old graphical UIs that look like brontosaurus' previous, or yggdrasil or the old mac shot - and then there's the "new look", like in lowrider's or the first one i noticed...
it must be the change from 16 or 256 colors to 16/24/32bit... but to me it looks like the leap from mid-90s to ~2000 is larger than the leap from ~2000 until now.
so, i'm still interested in linux screenshots from around the year 2000, on the internet, so not necessarily your own (i respect the decision to merge my thread into this one, but you can see it's a little bit different).

a. @ohnonot: Besides the colors and resolution, not sure what you mean with a leap, example? (I mean it's mostly about icons/windows and "custom" launchers for the last 20 years in my eyes)
b. Bunch of things went down the hill since amiga, like a lack of dedicated blitter (also running resolution per app), using accelerated graphics when it needs to be used, like text editor with a smooth scroll stop (ced on amiga) and such.
c. Also macs of the era were soft and hardware retards compared to the amiga (Unlike what the movie Jobs is trying to tell). Vim was first written for amiga as well (but don't quote me).

i guess it's in the eye of the beholder.
i guess it must be the colors.
but, while searching, i also noticed that 4 sites i searched all started in 2001: gnome-look.org, kde-look.org, linuxquestions.org and deviantart.com. interesting. the last one isn't even particularly linux-orientated.
i wonder what happened in 2001, to make all this possible.

Per wikipedia gnome 1.4 had released in 2001. It was still based on meta city back then but was huge because it was theme-able. Compared to KDE at the time, gnome was stylish and slick. Linux customization was really taking off. I was running Redhat 6.0 at the time with Gnome. My desktop wallpaper would have been a dark olive green background with a black stylized serpent or dragon. The gnome/metacity theme was a slightly lighter olive green to match the wallpaper. I went hunting for that wallpaper recently because it would be easy enough to modify a gtk-2 theme and rebuild that early, first customized Linux desktop. I got the wallpaper from either D-A or Digital Blasphemy. I have yet to be able to find it, however.

interesting.
do you also perceive some sort of leap from 1995 to, say, 1999?
also i wonder if this is a linux thing, or if operating systems in general did this leap.
2 possible reasons:
- hardware got better
- the internet got faster/ more accessible
researching wikipedias gnome & kde1 articles, i came up with more charming screenshots:
KDE:

GNOME:
