persistent boot from usb

Hi, does anyone know if there is a way to boot Crunchbang from usb, but for it to be persistent? I want to be able to carry around my settings and preferences and installed software on a usb. I have managed it with Xubuntu and puppylinux but I couldn't find a way with crunchbang. I wondered if it was possible as I much prefer Crunchbang
Thanks,

If you use the forum search tool at top right of page, you should find some info, including
CrunchBang waldorf liveUSB with persistence

Re: persistent boot from usb

Yes. you can install it to the usb as you would install to your hd, or you could do it the "correct" way, and there's a nice thread in this forum about it: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=35327

I've never used this method btw, but it should work.

edit: damo beat me to it.

Re: persistent boot from usb

Unlike Ubuntu-based and Puppy-based distros, for Debian and Arch distros, there are no easy and straightforward "file-based" methods for USB persistence. Debian-based distros, with the exception of DebianDog, tend to require using a separate partition (not a file) for USB persistence. Arch-based AlphaOS, unlike other Arch-based derivatives, also includes file-based USB persistence.

DebianDog developers chose to use a modified-Porteus method for their file-based USB persistence.

Re: persistent boot from usb

Knoppix is Debian based and offers persistence when you boot it.

Unless I'm not understanding this correctly, you can use a mkfs.ext4 file on Debian Live ISOs for persistence...

In practice, except for DebianDog, I have never been able to get "file-based" USB persistence to work with Debian-based distros. I have tried to do so with the latest SolydX and TweakOS without success. I have read though various online documentation for Debian USB persistence. Not only is it often conflicting with different syntax schemes and parameters but the documentation is clearly geared to "partition-based" USB persistence and not at all user-friendly like Ubuntu-based or Puppy-based distros.

I will have to check Knoppix to verify whether "file-based" USB persistence is featured.

I have never seen any links to or examples of "file-based" USB persistence for Crunchbang.

Re: persistent boot from usb

Yeah, my reply was a bit hasty. I researched it some more and have to agree, everything I find online is for creating another partition for persistence.

Re: persistent boot from usb

It also looks like persistence in Knoppix was dropped (see Wikipedia).
