Re: YouTube: #!++ Incorrectly Reviewed as Crunchbang "community" distro

Re "MATE". Linux Help Guy aka Puppy Linux World did a whole video on pronunciation where (with colourful language) he insisted that for it to be pronounced MAHTAY according to English spelling rules it would need to be written MATTE, like 'latte'. This of course is total bollocks (the last syllable of which rhymes with the last syllable of Linux). Latte is a loan word from Italian and its pronunciation in English (UK) is based purely on convention/fashion. I was abroad when the fashion for Latte hit, and gave it my own English pronunciation (rhymes with pâté, sort of based on a logic of bated versus batted and the fact that generally English does not double consonant sounds).

Still, some people insist on calling CentOS sent-oh-ess even though the guy who originally created it has stated categorically that it's pronounced sen-toss.

@ IntoCB: you're kinda right.

Latte means "milk" in Italian. In English it was "adapted" to name coffee with milk. Kinda like "pepperoni" (a blanket name for peppers in Italian -the produce, not the hot little seeds-) ended up being a kind of sausage.

Mate is not an English word. And in this case, AFAIK, it's not even a borrowed word, as the mate infusion seems to be pretty much unknown to English speaking people.
In this case especially, it's a Spanish word, used by a Spanish speaking developer to name his product.

So Spanish rules apply. Or at least they should... wink

I hereby declare that we should pronounce BunsenLabs as BoonsonLobs, so we can forever confuse people about the "correct" pronunciation of the distro. Given Mate's desktop model in the green undies, I can sort of forgive people for being confused about the pronunciation. Word association is a powerful thing.

When I had a professor tell me latex was pronounced latekh I was shocked after years of pronouncing it latex.. I thought "ah, ok, it's greek then", and  "wtf these programmers", at the same time.

edit: I'm going to write a program an call it burp, but in order to properly pronounce it you have to actually burp.  cool

No. It's spelled Boonson Lobs but it's pronounced "Throat Wobbler Mangrove."

Was ist das für ein Quatsch? English never transliterates the Greek chi as "x" but as "kh". Only xi (ks sound) is transliterated as "x". So according to convention it should be pronounced Leiteks or La:teks. I thought academics were meant to be intelligent.

Spelling counts: only LaTeX (Lamport TeX misspelled as latex) is pronounced lay-tek, your chemist/pharmacist  would think you daft/crazy if you asked for a latek condom/safe.

Pardon?

Mid central unrounded vowel sound in the second syllable; pretty much the way I (and probably most people) pronounce it.
