Over on the MEPIS forums, @stevo has backported version 2.17 of libc6 for Wheezy...
http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop … 88&t=37022
Any takers?
Use at your own risk, it will probably run amok & kill all the kittens in your neighbourhood, etc...

Time to take the test. I recently willingly screwed up one of my bare #! VMs, so I could run the latest version of Scrivener. That machine has only one usage (to write in a clean and peaceful environment), so I didn't care much. Currently installing Waldorf on a new one, will update this post with the results.

@boisei0 -- very brave sir, thank you!
It would be awesome if you could feed back your experience directly to @stevo (on the MEPIS forums, also on the Debian forum as @stevepusser) as well, because he knows far more about this than me.

That is exactly what I'll do after I finished testing. Just ran the post installation script, so it's an up to date #! Waldorf.
There we go... Hello libc6-2.17
Edit: Works like a charm Latest version of scrivener requires a newer version of libc6, not exactly sure which one, but 2.17 is good enough
Now to test more programs.
Edit 2: As Stevo stated in his topic, Google Earth 64 bit deb is not willing to install, because it's dependencies on ia32-libs-386 which has no installation candidate ready. Will add the logs for a second opinion to this post as soon as I setup an ssh between the machines

(note: power was just my next-in-line hostname, as I name systems after Turlough O'Carolan tunes)
Next up: Google Earth 32 bit, then over to Steam. As I don't have a Netflix account, I'm not able to test that one. If anyone need more programs tested, let me know. I'm about to repeat the same process on another new machine and move my writing desk to that one, as this solution does not screw up my locales
Edit 3: Added the logs to this post, furthermore, Steam is up and running and like Scrivener, it works like a charm.

As far as I understand SteamOS can do this because it recompiles every package against the newer libc6. I wouldn't know how you could "backport" libc6 itself. Maybe someone with better programming experience can clarify, but I'd steer clear myself.

@Alad -- according to @stevo on the MEPIS forums, they've been using it for a while with no reported problems...
Judging by his posts on the Debian forum, he really knows what he's doing.

^ Eh, remember ew who also reported no problems? 8o No disrespect to Steve, but you can see why I'm critical.

So how would I use this backport? It looks wonderful but I'm not sure how to update!

The instructions are in the link in my OP:
http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop … 88&t=37022
Add the repository to /etc/apt/sources/list
sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list <<< "deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/experimental/ experimental test"
Update the APT database:
sudo apt-get update
Then install the package:
sudo apt-get install -t experimental libc6
I think the packages are unsigned so you may get warnings about this -- just tell APT to go ahead anyway.
I am kind of guessing here though as I've never actually tried this (I use pure Debian Sid)...
You should probably ask over at the MEPIS forums if you have any problems -- stevo (the packager) is an utter legend and I'm sure he would be glad to help you out
