Thank you for the quick responses. It turns out that this was user error: my USB stick was bad. Apologies for consuming bandwidth.

debian-boot talked also about the problems with some of the weeklies for testing-jessie, only xfs available, etc.
RC2 works like a charm, at least for me. To usb via dd.

good point on using RC2 instead. I didn't get very far in my CrunchBang-ification of the RC1 system, so I'll likely start over with RC2.
