The real giveaway that the posted pic wasn't someone's "actual desktop" was the complete absence of cables or any other clutter.

@nore: I actually have considered the fauxcadeomy (faux facade sodomy) approach of a panel between the back of the desk and the wall behind it to hide cords. Never stolen power from a neighbor though.
I suppose it's possible that the monitor has a small ARM device mounted to its back with a wireless connection to the keyboard and mouse. Dose power cables doe - no way to hide 'em or explain away their absence.

Nice work space ohnonot. I really prefer black office furniture, it reflects less ambient light and cuts down the glare. Is the netbook an Aspire D250? Looks like the one I got not long ago. I love it!
