Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Andale Mono looks the best since we can't use Eurostile. Eurostile has a lot of character. However, it's pretty much owned by Adobe and Linotype font foundries. I don't know. Andale Mono at first glance got me but when I look more closely Liberation is a better font. However, truth in advertising, if you can grab someone on first glance, your ad will be seen. If not it will likely be ignored. So Andale Mono is a better choice, imo.

Frankenstein, using the #! logo, dwm logo and Debian swirl.  Colors are #222222, #DDDDDD and #D60952 (swirl was colorified).

my quick try

bunsenLabsJustLogo.png

and svg:
https://github.com/brontosaurusrex/post … stLogo.svg

p.s. (Tinkering behind:
- the no-font approach
- don't use Debian logo
- factual, direkt
- 1st letter could be perhaps used as standalone in certain situations)

I liked the bang homage as well wink

I agree that the pink would be wrong together with the Debian8 artwork. I've many times tried to use the Debian red as a basis for my theming. But it's a rare color, and even with a custom matching openbox-theme, and a matching gtk-theme, it's really hard to find a icon-theme that looks good with it. gnome-colors-wine perhaps. But not optimal.

Here you see a custom openbox-theme with that pink color, lol.

I'm using the grey one below myself. I guess I'm too conservative smile

If going bluish, you will have the least problem matching it. Lots of good blue icons wink

Anyway, nice to see all the activity. Bunsen will probably be great. I have no time to keep proper track of your development, as I now have started on the dreaded Debian-live-manual. Just made my first live-build. Off to test it now. Wish me luck. I think I need it smile

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

I don't like number 9 and 10, because the flame is photo-realistic and a good logo should never be. Long time ago in the high school my visual arts teacher said good logos (and also good coats of arms) work in any monochrome format, even stencilled on a wall, while bad ones rarely do and it's usually because of the photo-realistic approach.

I vote for number 8, it's very nice.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

I like Naik's contribution with the superimposed swirls, and am thinking a flipped swirl would work very well as a flame.

I'd suggest:
smaller swirl above burner, Jessie blue, inverted as flame
larger swirl behind smaller one, light grey, right-side-up as "the magic smoke", originating at base of flame swirl

It would of course be preferable to use an open-source font, but remember that font foundries can only copyright the code used to draw the fonts, not the fonts themselves.  Once the image has been made into a bitmap file, for example, Adobe/Linotype couldn't make any claim against it.

Interesting. I did not know that. working in the newspaper business I always err to the side of safety when it come to copyrights, attributions and stuff like that.

Of course, if we go blabbing about the global military industrial entertainment conspiracy using Andale in the logo, this might draw unwanted attention. wink

Sorry but I think the example at 10 looks rather like the British Gas logo ... of whom I'm not a great admirer.
Number 8 though, or those without the larger flame are all appealing.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

demo's #6 works best as logo/symbol, because it is simple enough, but the text under the vessel needs some more work. all the others have too many elements. first font used is ok, the other ones look still a bit uninspired. photorealistic flame is a nono.

brontosaurusrex' pixel approach is nice. I like the bunsen part with that white pixel, the outlined "lab" part not so much

it does not do good to a logo to try to show a bunsen burner and a swirl and a flame and a mad scientist and his one-eyed cat and what not. too much. don't over-illustrate the name, create an abstraction and keep it simple fellas.. wink
no offense intended, just my 2¢

here's my take on the problem.. I was trying to find a abstraction for the vessel and the flame and to get it in one line:

/__\
BUNSEN

/ \
BUNSEN < I like this

BUNSEN /__\ LABS

BUNSEN /\ LABS

BUNSEN/\LABS < ..getting there..

BUNSEN^LABS

BUNSEN^LINUX < yep.

/B\

BUNSEN/\LABS

BUNSEN /\ LABS

BUNSEN^LABS

BUNSEN^LINUX

the last one would it be for me. with thin or regular simple sans-serif font please. not bold.
I like the second in the code-block as basic sign as well.

9/10 (for those of you who follow image board memes). wink
I still prefer CamelCase though:

Bunsen^Labs

EDIT:  Just ran a few figlets, just in case we want to try that route for a larger logo.  I like this one:

~$ figlet Bunsen/\\Labs

EDIT:  Didn't like how that was rendered in Chromium's code block; here's a screenshot:

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Constructive artistic criticism is always welcome - speaking for myself I have no formal training, so pointing out pitfalls is good.

To be a bit clearer though, this thread is initially to get an avatar/logo for the GitHub organisation page; to come up with something that represents us.

Some more ideas/elements to play with
