Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

I'm sorry, I try pretty hard to not ask questions on forums and look on google instead, but I can't figure out for the life of me what's wrong with my wireless setup.

It was working for a while, but then it stopped, and I have no clue why. "sudo wlan0 scan" returns no scan results for wlan0. I think b43 firmware should work for my system (supported by the fact that nm-applet/nmcli say "wireless connections: disconnected" - but only after I do "modprobe b43" - otherwise they don't even mention wireless). However, when I try to install/reconfigure firmware-b43-installer, i get:

No chroot environment found. Starting normal installation
Unsupported device(s) found: PCI id 14e4:4331
Aborting.

Because of this, I followed this post, which basically said to do:

sudo modprobe b43
$ export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
$ wget http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2 ; tar -xjf broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2
$ sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" broadcom-wl-5.100.138/linux/wl_apsta.o
$ dmesg | tail -2

And this is how I got wireless to work in crunchbang on my mac in the first place before it stopped working as aforementioned. That solution doesn't seem to work anymore. I have also tried wl, but that doesn't seem to help either.

Finally, I've tried some small things like "sudo ifconfig wlan0 down; sudo ifconfig wlan0 up", which does nothing, as well as "sudo ifdown wlan0; sudo ifup wlan0", and this tells me:

$ sudo ifdown wlan0
ifdown: interface wlan0 not configured
$ sudo ifup wlan0
Ignoring unknown interface wlan0=wlan0.

I was able to get wireless to work on other distros on my macbook before, so maybe it's my inexperience with debian (and i'm not a guru), but I'm at loss as to what's wrong. I'm sorry if this kind of thing gets asked a lot, but I've been looking for solutions for quite sometime, and haven't been able to pinpoint the source of the problem. Can anyone help or redirect me?

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

Post the correct wlan part of

lspci -kv
iwconfig
ifconfig -a

Is it really "wlan0"?

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

i think "sudo wlan0 scan" is not a command.
for me, getting some general info about network adapters, has always worked with "ip link" (no sudo required).
so you can make sure whether your device is really named wlan0.
i just installed archlinux on an old laptop with broadcom wireless (4311) so i not only sympathize but might even be able to help...

Oops, I meant i meant "sudo iwlist wlan0 scan" didn't return anything; twas a typo.

It is indeed wlan0, I didn't screw up that badly  tongue (although i do understand, when i did this on arch, it was wlp2s0 instead of wlan0).

Anyway, after going to sleep and start #! up again... wireless started working again! I didn't do anything... and I had rebooted plenty of times before, so it's probably not that. Truly bizarre...

edit: so i guess this is no longer a problem (for now?), although i won't mark it as solved, since I still have no idea what happened? idk.

EDIT2: Now it doesn't work! again... I really did nothing between it working and it not working other than browsing the internet and then shutting it down for a while and rebooting. This seems really random...

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

Daft thing to ask, do you have local connectivity? Can you ping your gateway? Do you have other wireless devices that are working? Sometimes people spend many hours troubleshooting a computer, only to find the router needed rebooting.. you've had *some* communication with it.. as you have an IP assigned. so DHCP is functioning.

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

I like daft questions. It's better that I did something stupid than disastrous :T

Unfortunately, I know it's not my router because I can connect with wifi on my phone while my computer can't. Also during these times, I can't see my neighbor's networks either.

On another note, my wireless is working again, so pinging my gateway right now would be kinda pointless.

In any case, it seems that if the wireless works on boot, it keeps working until the computer is turned off. Otherwise, it won't work, and I have to turn off the computer and hope that the wireless works at some other time.

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

Sometimes their are problems if you switch between Windows and Linux. If the wlan does not work check again

ifconfig wlan0
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

In the first command you see (or not see) your own ip-adress "192.168.1.18" . In the second command you find the gateway-adress (router inside ip-address) you can test the connection to the router and the internet. The third command shows you your nameserver (normally your router-ip-address). If you have problems only with the nameserver you get different results for:

ping 8.8.8.8  (google nameserver)
ping google-public-dns-a.google.com

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

That might be it, since I have been booting into Windows (Bootcamp) occasionally. It seemed kind of inconsistent though (and frankly, why would that happen?), so I didn't suspect it being the issue.

So basically, what you're saying that using Windows occasionally... for some reason, screws up DNS settings on #!, and would likely make the settings in /etc/resolv.conf wrong, and I should change that back to being the address listed as my gateway (assuming this is the issue)?

windows (or, more precisely, using more than one OS on one computer) cannot per se screw things up on crunchbang, but maybe on your router or with your ISP.

a few more ideas...

have you actually rebooted the router after not being able to connect?
always better to be safe, or at least to troubleshoot (if it works after rebooting the router, that still doesn't mean the problem is solved).

you might want to unblock with rfkill again, it doesn't always seem to stick.

i see from your first post that you istalled wl and removed it again - are you sure nothing went wrong there?

have you installed some other network managers? i once had the situation where wicd wouldn't work until i uninstalled network-manager.

i had this situation on arch where linux would connect to wlan with password and all but would not connect to the internet, because dhcpcd was busy. so, when you say "not working", make sure what exactly that means.

i recommend archwiki's broadcom wireless section - it has lots of information NOT specific to archlinux. especially the links to linuxwireless and so on. check it all out, step by step!
of course there might be similar guides for debian.

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

hey greenworld,
I'm in the same boat (MB/b4331) and I've tried practically everything at this point.
- wl refuses to build on my custom 3.14 kernel
- I reinstalled b43 (firmware-b43-installer) and got the same unsupported device error.
- tried this trick to occasional success but mostly not: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=17368
- countless other things I don't remember

BUT I've got enough of a solution to get me by:
Apparently the only reason firmware-b43-installer says 4331 is not supported is because of a stupid post install script that claims its not suppored EVEN THOUGH IT IS according to the kernel page listing supported devices http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43
There was a bug report about the false post install script but somehow it never made it to the repo
See here: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=682427

Anyway, I reinstalled b43 and it seems to work for 5 to 10 minutes until the network kicks me off, then goes into an authentication loop.
My pathetic defeated solution that nonetheless gets me through the day until I can get home to ethernet is simply:
sudo modprobe -r b43 && sudo modprobe b43
set to an alias, that I fire off every 10 minutes / whenever I need the internet.

If you got rid of b43 at any point or just want to reinstall for good luck, find the .deb in /var/cache/apt/archives and edit the postinit script:
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … repack-deb

Good luck and condolences.
I'm now looking up driver support on linux for every computer I buy for the rest of my life after this MBP8,2 disaster.

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

Did anyone ever find a reliable solution to this problem?

I'm trying CrunchBang for the first time today (yes, I know development has officially ended, but from reading about it, it's just the kind of distro I've been wanting for a very long time).

And I too have the BCM4331 network controller in my MacBook Pro. I've installed at least ten different distros on this hardware and all of them have found the network controller and handled wireless connectivity correctly without any intervention on my part. So CrunchBang is the first I've encountered to have a problem with this.

So if there are no reliable solutions to this problem, does that mean that there are only... what... me and two other people in the world who have tried to run CrunchBang on the Macbook Pro with BCM4331 network controller?

Thanks for any replies.

Re: Wireless randomly failing Macbook Pro [BCM4331]

Hey Gamonics,
to me it sounds like you have this problem:
"crunchbang does not detect my wireless adapter and it happens to be the same piece of hardware as mentioned in this post"
however, that is not exactly what has been discussed in this thread.
i doubt your problem is exactly the same, so i recommend starting a new thread.
or rather, search the forums for solutions first (it's a rather common problem and usually resolved by installing firmware and/or upgrading to the backported kernel).
if you still feel the need to start a new thread, provide as much information as possible, e.g. like this.
