Re: #! inspired Debian spinoff - help on some of the finer points please!

Thanks. You mentioned a script, could you give a link? smile

My plan is to initially do the scripted build from debian netinst. However part of the beauty of #! for me was the ease of installation, the booting on any hardware into a live environment to test the default hw/sw compatibility, and the ability to keep a #! USB as a computer-agnostic rescue option. For this reason I'd like to follow through with the iso idea, though that will be probably a second or third major iteration of my project. Thanks!

Thanks @altman! I'll update when I get something substantial up and moving. Full disclosure: I'm an American forward deployed to Afghanistan right now. I will be here for a while. It's actually a pretty ideal development environment due to lack of typical distractions (tv, booze, etc) but sometimes I'll have periodic internet outages. So it will be a bizarre way to start a project like this, but I'm in!

@AnInkedSoul - awesome, thanks I'll check that stuff out. Cheers!

Re: #! inspired Debian spinoff - help on some of the finer points please!

with your initial (good!) questions answered rather well indeed, i wish you the best with this adventure. smile
any idea what you'd call it?

you seem to be planning for more than just rolling (which i take to mean just "sid" in relation to debian), to include releases for all branches, which may prove to be a sizeable workload.  any notion as to how often you'd release iso snapshots?  (even, auto-generated on a timer?!) presumably more rapid release for sid than testing/stable?  ~ idk, maybe these questions are jumping the gun.  one step at a time.

vsido's a #! inspired sid/experimental distro, releasing every fortnight or there abouts (i think), and manages to pull off a rather cushy media-ready userland and simple but glitsy composit'ed fluxbox interface for something in the 350-450mb region iirc.  might be some more tips n tricks to learn from its development too.  smile
