fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

http://brogue.wikia.com/wiki/Brogue_Wiki

http://www.gamernode.com/glutton-for-pu … roguelike/

since coming of age on RPGs from diablo 1 & 2 (i prefer part 1 over 2 and have never tried 3 yet) and having tested quite a few ascii-art roguelikes like dungeon crawl and others, i have to admit that this one simply suits me best. gameplay is fun and the ascii-art is indeed downright beautiful. really addictive experience  despite (or even due to ?) permadeath. high nerd factor of course, but an easy introduction for noobs to the genre. (i must admit that dwarf fortress is way beyond my scope...)

there are quite a few videos about brogue on youtube.

EDIT: even long before diablo, i loved to play gauntlet on my 8 bit amstrad cpc 6128 back in the late eighties... now call me old. smile

Re: fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup has been my roguelike of choice for a while, but after seeing a tiny thumbnail of a screenshot of brogue I've been meaning to give it a try.

After seeing a full-sized screenshot on that article you just linked, I'm extracting Brogue from its zip file right now. Holy crap that looks amazing.

Re: fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

The problems just started compounding on my first game. First I got descended a few floors to where the monsters were all stronger than I was, then I got stuck between a mob and pools of lava, then I started chugging potions and reading scrolls and each of them made things worse. First I created a cloud of confusing gas, started hallucinating, then I fell into a pool of lava and started burning. After that, I drank a potion that descended me yet another floor right onto some dry grass which was set ablaze by my burning body, engulfing the entire level in flame. Then to top things off, some more monsters (which were now burning as well) surrounded me and killed me off as I stumbled around trying to get away.

Looks kinda interesting, but the non-tech ingluoso (are there any translations?) is really hard to understand for me, also was having hard time imagining that @ is me and that V is evil bat.

Re: fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

down on level 5 last night i was suddenly surrounded by an army of pink jelly while chasing a monkey which had stolen one of my scrolls.
being low on health anyway, in a desperate move i chose to apply a green potion, while having no clue what to expect from it.
you guessed it... of course it contained CAUSTIC GAS !  8o yikes  sad  mad  big_smile  lol  ]:D
it made me laugh hard... i really love this game.

it must have been compiled with the --sarcasm option activated. wink

Re: fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

today i found a software named "noteye", which stands for "necklace of the eye":

http://www.roguetemple.com/z/noteye/

using this, it looks like brogue can be played in FPP, isometric and tiled modes:

http://www.roguetemple.com/z/noteye/shots.php

at least, brogue version 1.7.0 has been tested with it. this is very interesting.
when i find the time (hopefully next week-end), i will dig further into this and report back here soon.

I'm trying Stone Soup in FPP mode. I'll be back in a week, maybe.

Re: fantastic ascii-art roguelike: brogue

OK... here are quite a few things i managed to find out on this week-end:

1. the brogue tiles/isometric view (aka "noteye") is provided for version 1.7.0 and WINDOWS only ! *ooomph* sad

2. i discovered a sound add-on for version 1.7.4. here:

http://brogue.createforumhosting.com/br … t1088.html

it works... *drumroll* ...you guessed it... on WINDOWS only ! *double-argh* sad

so i'm still hooked on the basic brogue without any add-ons, which ain't bad either.

however, following the golden RTFM rule, at least i've discovered that there is an "easy mode" that can be activated by pressing "&" in game, which -- of course -- comes at the expense of 90% of your gold... ]:D
