[SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Debian SID

Seems funny putting a [Solved] in this as I write it.  But late Monday (5 May) I did:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --no-install-recommends

and ended up with with 'systemd' installed and 'policykit-1' & 'kmod' installed or updated.

From then on I could not mount my external HDD when I plugged it in.  I got a "Not authorized to preform operation."  First thing I did was reboot into #! Waldorf and sure enough, Thunar mounted and dismounted it perfectly.

So I hit the search engines  and found a few links regarding "Not authorized to preform operation." but it was Unia that put me onto the right path with a link to the ARCH Wiki: Polkit.  ARCH does things a bit different but it lead me to more searching and I found: Re: How to make polkit allow everything.  Yea right Everything ... NOT.  But check that last post quoted here:

rw_norris » 2013-11-03 00:41 wrote:

Note that for the current (at time of writing) Debian Unstable has moved to udisks2

So now it's:

[Allow Automount]
Identity=unix-group:plugdev
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount
ResultAny=yes
ResultInactive=yes
ResultActive=yes

for a .pkla type file.

Hmmmm I didn't have a single file in /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/ so I created one:

/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/auto-mount.pkla

[Allow Automount]
Identity=unix-group:plugdev
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount
ResultAny=yes
ResultInactive=yes
ResultActive=yes

X'd my fingers and plugged in my external HDD .. Fired up thunar and GREAT NEWS.  I didn't even need to log-out or reboot, thunar mounted and unmounted it perfectly.

Thank you Unia and rw_norris for your one and only post on the Debian Fourms

OK, that the solved part ... I'll be posting a please help thread for the next part: kmod errors on boot in the Help & Support (Testing/Unstable) section shortly.

Hope this helps someone else.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Today I plug my 250GB External HDD to back up - first one in June.

 04 Jun 14 | 09:25:01 ~
    $ s11bk
Syncing /home     to '/media/sector11/disk/S11-Jun/'
rsync: mkdir "/media/sector11/disk/S11-Jun" failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(674) [Receiver=3.1.0]
Syncing /media/5/ to /media/sector11/disk/M5/
rsync: mkdir "/media/sector11/disk/M5" failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(674) [Receiver=3.1.0]

Syncing complete - Close Terminal

 04 Jun 14 | 09:25:25 ~
    $

Fire up Thunar ... click on "disk":

Not authorized to preform operation.

I check: /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/auto-mount.pkla - it is the same as stated above.

I run

gksu thunar

it doesn't see it.

pcmanfm

and I see it, can't mount it.

gksu pcmanfm

and there it is ... and it's mine for crying out loud ...
2014_06_04_09_31_15_955x553_Sector11.jpg
Now once that is done I can use it ... BUT I have to change my s11bk script for backups:

##### Debian Stable TARGET ###
TARGET="/media/disk/S11-$(date +"$MON")"
##### Debian SID TARGET ###
#TARGET="/media/sector11/disk/S11-$(date +"$MON")"
#####

For years it mounted as: /media/disk/  then in SID it changed and mounted as /media/sector11/disk/ and now in SID it will only access it at /media/disk/

Also I MUST use gksu thunar (doesn't see it) gksu pcmanfm to mount it and then again to unmount it.

Now I really stumped!

Any help greatly appreciated.  I HATE systemd!!!!

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

I don't know if this will help you (I don't track Sid), but in my Arch install I need this file: /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-enable-mount.rules

polkit.addRule(function(action) {
    if (action.id == "org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount-system") {
        return polkit.Result.YES;
    }
});

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

^ Should work... the polkit syntax changed in some version, so the old .pkla files no longer work.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

@ Head_on_a_Stick & Alad

OK, I tried that: /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/10-enable-mount.rules - - copy and pasted Head_on_a_Stick's file in place.

- - does not work, I get the same message. (did a reboot too just to be sure)

- Plug the HDD in and thunar sees it but will not mount it.
-  start pcmanfm as root - and click on /disk - now thunar will mount the disk as well.
- and they both tell me it's mine!  sad

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

This stuff is hard, reminds of Windows. hmm

- Do you have gvfs installed?

apt-cache policy gvfs

- What does your .xinitrc look like?

- Do you have policykit-1-gnome installed

apt-cache policy policykit-1-gnome

and set in autostart:

/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

I think polkit may be a .service started by sytemd --- it depends which version of systemd Debian Sid is running (the Arch version deprecated this function as of yesterday...) hmm
What is the output of:

systemctl status polkit.service

And while we're at it, might as well see the output of:

systemctl --all

Are we having fun yet? tongue

Yes Windows ... but why does it change over night and kill setups?  sad
Don't answer that . . . just thinking out loud.

I have both:

 05 Jun 14 | 09:17:07 ~
    $ acpol gvfs
gvfs:
  Installed: 1.20.2-1
  Candidate: 1.20.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 1.20.2-1 0
        990 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

 05 Jun 14 | 09:17:09 ~
    $ acpol policykit-1-gnome
policykit-1-gnome:
  Installed: 0.105-2
  Candidate: 0.105-2
  Version table:
 *** 0.105-2 0
        990 http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ sid/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

 05 Jun 14 | 09:17:48 ~
    $

and set in autostart:

/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &

No never had that in my autostart file.  sad

and look at this I have two!  mad

/usr/lib/policykit-1
    /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkit-agent-helper-1
    /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd

/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome
    /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

Should I still use the line above in autostart?

- What does your .xinitrc look like?

Don't have one ... also do not have:

/etc/skel/.xinitrc

~/.xsession I have:

eval 'dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session'
exec ck-launch-session openbox-session

Are you ready for this: DING!

 05 Jun 14 | 09:38:38 ~
    $ systemctl status polkit.service

   Loaded: error (Reason: No such file or directory)

And while we're at it, might as well see the output of:

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

the Arch version deprecated this function as of yesterday...

How so?

Sector11: Well if polkit isn't running at all you needn't start the GNOME agent just yet...

Systemd troubleshooting: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … emd_errors

A bit more overview gives:

systemctl --state=failed

Well, I don't seem to have it running either:

polkit.service - Authorization Manager
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/polkit.service; static)
   Active: inactive (dead)
     Docs: man:polkit(8)

Manually supplying systemctl start polkit did run it, but systemctl enable gave some error on a missing Install section. (?)

If you're using an .xsession file does that mean you're also using SLiM or another display manager?

Grasping at straws here. Linux NT. sad

So is that good or bad?

Again, just to stay on track: Debian SID here

From the link you posted and code you showed:

 05 Jun 14 | 14:45:19 ~
    $ systemctl --state=failed
systemctl: unrecognized option '--state=failed'

 05 Jun 14 | 14:45:25 ~
    $

man page works:

 05 Jun 14 | 14:49:45 ~
    $ systemctl --failed
0 loaded units listed. Pass --all to see loaded but inactive units, too.
To show all installed unit files use 'systemctl list-unit-files'.

 05 Jun 14 | 14:49:51 ~
    $

I'm running lightdm.

Keep on grasping ... I don't mind at all.   smile

Manually supplying systemctl start polkit did run it, but systemctl enable gave some error on a missing Install section. (?)

How did you stop / disable it - incase I try and it fails as well.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Sorry for the confusion --- polkit.service is not deprecated at all, I was just being thick (again) sad
Polkit.service is called up by programs when authorisation is needed --- it cannot be enabled by systemctl...
@Sector11 --- according to the output of "systemctl --all" you have a polkitd.service running; searching for this on the Arch forums seems to show that this is an old .service, no longer used: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1210459
Perhaps you could try running:

sudo systemctl stop polkitd.service

Then trying thunar with your drive. If it works (!), run:

sudo systemctl disable polkitd.service

If the polkitd.service re-appears on re-booting after running the above command, you may have to delete (or move) /usr/lib/systemd/system/polkitd.service...
I too am reaching for the straw jar here hmm
EDIT: Maybe you could add the drive to your fstab (using its UUID) & put "user" in the options section?

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Again, just to stay on track: Debian SID here

Sorry, I had expected these things to be consistent across distributions.  hmm

Polkit.service is called up by programs when authorisation is needed --- it cannot be enabled by systemctl...

Thanks, didn't know that.

I'm running lightdm.

Does that actually need a separate ~/.xsession file? You could rename it, see if it helps

Otherwise try @HoaS's suggestions - there's also udevil (though in another thread that didn't help either)

No I didn't put that "SID" thing up for that - just a simple reminder.  big_smile  Please don't take it wrong.

Tried:

sudo systemctl stop polkitd.service

it didn't work so never got to:

sudo systemctl disable polkitd.service

Since the drive is not plugged in all the time I don't thing the fstab idea is an option.  I may be wrong though.

I guess I'll be spending a lot more time with Startpage and/or DuckDuckGo.  smile

It "will" get fixed - just not sure when or how yet.   wink

Well this just keep getting worse.

So it is still a quest in progress with more urgency.  Surprised it hasn't locked me out of some other partitions on my HDD!

Any help appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Logging in after months because it breaks my heart that S11 can't watch his DVD smile

Let's do it a bit more extreme:

sudo nano /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy
sudo nano /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks2.policy

We should edit both files, I am not sure which you have. In the section that reads " <description>Mount a filesystem</description>" find the line that contains:

<allow_any>auth_admin</allow_any>

or so. Change it to read

<allow_any>yes</allow_any>

Do this in both files. It should work at once.

Edit: by the way, "Identity=unix-group:plugdev" in the pkla file means that your user should be in the plugdev group. Probably your user is in the cdrom group, that's why the DVD doesn't get the policy.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

@ machinebacon - You sir are a gentleman and a scholar!  And if I may add: sorely missed by many!

Thank you for this.

Getting closer: /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks2.policy - found and changed

  <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks2.filesystem-mount">
    <description>Mount a filesystem</description>
... {snip extra language stuff}
    <message>Authentication is required to mount the filesystem</message>
... {snip extra language stuff}
    <defaults>
      <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
      <allow_inactive>auth_admin</allow_inactive>
      <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
    </defaults>
  </action>

/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy has no "<description>Mount a filesystem</description>"
Result is that Thunar sees "Identity" but still not authorized.
2014_06_08_14_15_40_1920x1080_Sector11.jpg
So back to: /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy and I searched for: ".filesystem-mount">" and found:

  <action id="org.freedesktop.udisks.filesystem-mount">
    <description>Mount a device</description>
... {snip extra language stuff}
    <message>Authentication is required to mount the device</message>
... {snip extra language stuff}
    <defaults>
      <allow_any>yes</allow_any>
      <allow_inactive>no</allow_inactive>
      <allow_active>yes</allow_active>
    </defaults>
  </action>

and changed that to "yes" as well.  Results are the same.  Thunar sees the DVD (and external HDD /disk), won't mount them,

RE Groups - I'm in cdrom and plugdev so no change needed there.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Sector, let's just create another pkla file, like /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/auto-mount2.pkla

[udisks]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.freedesktop.udisks*
ResultAny=yes

We would give permissions to all users, and to both udisks versions.

Another question, is there a /dev/sr0 entry in fstab? Just asking smile

Can we see your fstab please?
BTW, my suggested addition to fstab should work with a non-permanent drive as long as the "<pass>" option is set to "0" smile

^ I think so too.

/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro 0 0

should already do the trick, independently from thunar and the whole freedesktop crap.

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

You guys are awesome.

@ machinebacon /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/auto-mount2.pkla is created.

$ less /etc/fstab - no /dev/sr0 - but I remember seeing it - probably before systemd took control!

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point>   <type>  <options>       <dump>  <pass>

proc    /proc   proc    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda6       /       ext4    relatime,errors=remount-ro      0       1
/dev/sda5       /media/5        ext4    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda8       /media/8        ext4    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda1       /media/sda1     ext4    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda2       /media/sda2     ext4    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda9       /media/9        ext4    defaults        0       0
/dev/sda7       /home   ext4    relatime        0       0
/dev/sda3       none    swap    sw      0       0
/dev/cdrom      /media/cdrom    udf,iso9660     user,noauto,exec,utf8   0       0

/etc/fstab (END)

Again @ machinebacon: So do I still do what you said:

/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,ro 0 0

cuz I'd like to get rid of systemd and this freedesktop crap!!!!

And in my own defence I did say:

I don't think the fstab idea is an option.  I may be wrong though.

ARCH wiki to the rescue, was going to ask what <pass> was as I have never played with it.

RE the HDD so would that be something like:

/dev/sdb?	/media/disk	ext4	defaults	0	0

Guessing sdb2.

How would this affect "USB sticks" --- OK that's stretching it but hey, I'm here.  big_smile

And would I need it after the new file creation?

Use the UUID of your removable drive to identify it in the fstab, rather than /dev/sdb<x> smile

UUID=<big long string found using "lsblk -f">     /media/disk     ext4     user    0     0

Don't use "defaults", as this includes "nouser" --- the opposite of what you're trying to acheive wink

Re: [SOLVED] "Not authorized to preform operation."

Guys,
Just a quick note, the problem that Sector11 system is experiencing happened on my testing system when it was running Debian Wheezy with OB and Thunar as a file manager. Now the system is running Debian Wheezy with PCManFM as file manager and the problem went away. I'm writing this just to probably provide some light to the problem. Could Thunar be the issue?

th_2014-06-08-144500_1920x1080_scrot_zps216d25d5.png

Edit: I would dare to say that I did try all the above without success, the bad thing is that I didn't document what steps I tried. It was really frustrating.

Kind Regards,

LinuxReign

although it doesn't show in /etc/fstab - and thunar is mounting / unmounting it perfectly!

Now saying that I can see the DVD - still can't play it ... but can in #! old and new.

@ linuxreign - No don't think it is Thunar . it's systemd stuff.  In my forst post I stated I could see the drive with pcmanfm but needed root to see it ... and permissions show sector11 as the owner.  Thanks for your input though.
