Three more spammers reported today.
Black magic?! Really?
~ Wait - what? ~

I think I see what happens. They have a couple post bots fill the forum with a whole lotta nonsense and gobbledygook to distract us from the spider bot that makes a single post and quietly crawls the forum. All gone...though I suspect some of the recent non-posting registrants are also spiders...

Black magic?! Really?
Apparently, the Indian scammers who can't use a computer or read "Hello, I am calling from he computer maintenance department of the Microsoft" from a script. scam "dumb Americans, Aussies, & Brits" with black magic & more mantras than they have rice. They then complain to their local media that their job is so hard because "The callers be sometimes abusing us & sometimes like in bad words" when they get caught.

Now, more SPAM from the black magic stylings of Baba Ji
At this time, the O#!ETHDC strongly urges non-tinfoil hat wearers to seek shelter in the lowest level of a reinforced structure, unplug all electronic appliances, and stay more than 100ft away from any cell phones or other wireless communication devices

I enjoyed it ... not one I'd get my wallet out to see again though.

I invited him to join Linux BBQ forum, but Babaji is from India and therefore a vegetarian.

But there is a "vegeta - extra-lite snapwm" roast ... of course then he'd be 'beaning' instead of spamming and we'd be passing out air freshener vs tin foil for hats. 8)

Interesting tidbit. My one Indian friend recently informed me "Baba Ji" is not a name, it's a title. It's a formal term for "My Father"

Correct but it is not always literally the biological father... for example you might call your teacher or Guru "babaji"
Interesting that Linux BBQ has a tofu spin now, I might have to give it a second chance now that they are not cramming their meat down my throat!

so is corenominal the ONLY person who can make changes to the forum?
it seems like there are a number of different, relatively easy solutions that can be implemented
and there are certainly enough technically competent people who care about the forum
could corenominal be persuaded to delegate the forum upkeep?

^ You have a suggestion for Corenominal & the mods? To quote Capt. Price, "Join the bloody queue." We've already implemented captcha & other methods to impair a Bot's ability to register. The problem now, it seems, is fighting bot's that've already registered & are lying dormant, waiting to attack. During these trying times, please use extreme caution, & keep your tinfoil hat on at all times. If you don't have a tinfoil hat, feel free to pick one up at an Official #! Emergency Tinfoil Hat Distribution Center near you. If there are no distribution centers near you, remain indoors, away from any active broadcasting devices, & wait for Sector11 or Damo to fly overhead & drop a few crates of them, courtesy of the O#!ETHDC We're working the covert ops, propaganda, & civilian affairs area of the War on SPAM

Just to let you all know that I spend every night on a "seek and destroy" mission on here, flushing out the spam accounts. Every thread/post/user that you hit the Report button on, alerts us mods and we deal with it.
Philip and I are the only people with the ability to delete - we were once burned by a user who accessed a mod account and proceeded to try and delete the forums in their entirety. Luckily, Philip keeps a regular back up and the forums were restored save for a few hours of lost posts whilst we were asleep. Since this experience, Philip amended who can delete and what can be deleted.
Some of you on here must remember those heady days! Oh, how fun they were! NOT

@ bobobex and corenominal
Sounds like "Mission: Impossible!" Your mission should you choose to accept it is to search for and destroy all spam-bot accounts, threads and posts. Also where possible block IP addresses!
Tis' why I only report once per <spammer_name>, and not the whole 'X' number of spam posts they put out. Once at the profile - the actual posts are just a link away.
Yea, I seem to recall that incident ... not a nice thing to happen to a forum.
The CrunchBang Forum survived that, it will survive this!

That's a problem in itself. New users may not realize the dangers ...
Obviously some people do click on the links ... or 'spammers' would not be interested in what they do.
So sad .... maybe a new thread:
Understanding Safe Internet Practices
with links to help people - a couple of examples:
Phishing Scams - Anti-Phishing Information - if nothing else - read this
From that last link - I'll add: forum post as well as email:
What to do if you Receive a Suspected Phishing Scam
DO NOT click on any links in the scam email.
DO NOT supply any personal information of any kind as a result of the email
DO NOT reply to the email or attempt to contact the senders in any way.
DO NOT supply any information on the bogus website that may appear in your browser if you have clicked a link in the email.
DO NOT open any attachments that arrive with the email
REPORT the phishing scam (click here for reporting methods).
DELETE the email from your computer as soon as possible.
If you need more information about a suspected phishing scam, visit the legitimate website of the targeted institution or contact the institution directly. The institution's website may provide current information about the scam email you received.
