the qnub-test

{ -- this all started as some fun, dont take it too seriously -- }

" YOU WANT THE QNUB?  YOU CANT HANDLE THE QNUB! " - some angry general denying those he saw as inferior from having any access to qnub.

here's the qnub-test to see if you might be worthy of the the qnub font.

you're almost certainly not leet enough, but since "almost certain" is not certain at all, and doubly because certainty is the mother of fools, here's the qnub-test to see if you might be worthy of the the qnub:

see how long you can run qnub-test as your font in *applications*.

we've not determined how long someone using qnub-test for will be sufficient duration to cause the real qnub font to surface...  so lets just see for how long we can do it.

one has to at least be strong and persistent enough to get over that initial shock.  when first plunged into qnub, you are unlikely to immediately think "oh yes, this is perfectly readable"... infact it's quite probably you wont even be thinking "that's writing".   so with that rather dire sounding warning out of the way, let me guide you into it gently with some screenshots of what you might be getting yourself in for....

so, maybe you are mad enough to be using the hollywood fontsize...  20pt.
noobs20.png

or maybe you are more accustomed to a comfortably large enough 14pt sans font...
noobs14.png

or maybe you're already leet enough to be using monospace at 11pt
leet11.png

or maybe you have found (my old fave) "clean", which will be available to you in crunchbang once you enable bitmap fonts.
leetclean.png

and maybe you thought "WOW THAT'S SMALL"... yes, lets call that a micro font.

and if "clean" is a micro font, then... does that make djsl a nano font?
leetdjsl.png
(i made that, based on progsole just as a first ever practice run at making a font)

no?  ok, so surely that's as small as it gets... right?

OH!~NO.  IT GETS MUCH SMALLER!   THUS:  BEHOLD!
the realm where every pixel counts...
QNUB(-test)
leetqnub-test.png

.... can fit how much on screen at one time!?  yikes
... and yes, that is usable.  it may just take a lower resolution and/or leaning forward, and definately a little while to adjust.

now also... a warning...  some applications may not be able to handle having such a small font, and may even fail to launch (like vlc did for me, when qnub-test was set as gtk font).   bold will also make a lot of characters indistinguishable.

here's a couple of examples of qnub being used for irc:
qnub-test in in erc (in emacs) (i managed to stay in qnub, on lowest resolution for a few hours.  mere minutes in full resolution, though it was muhc much better than expected.)
qnub-test in weechat (orbea enjoyed returning to his atari font, which by comparison seemed sane for a change.)

with all that said, nothing left to do but to once again display the challenge:
see how long you can run qnub-test as your font in *applications*.
and provide a link to the qnub-test.obt font for you brave souls to download:
qnub-test (sorry, link was to an imaginary ".obt" file, instead of the existing ".otb"... i blame muscle memory from all that "ob" talk)

ps,
here's djsl too:
djsl

pps,
i'm happy with tidyr for the most part.  tidyr was made shortly after qnub-test, sitting in the sweet spot between djsl and qnub-test.

obstacles are only in your mind. how you deal with them is what "matters".

Re: the qnub-test

oops, i thought i fixed that duff link ages ago.   .otb, not .obt

should be good to go.

~
oh, and just realised, when i'm not using my custom css, that picture (^ valroadie's) doesnt display correctly.  shrinks it, aliasing the fonts into ilegibility.  cant shrink the qnub, it's already as small as can be.   wink

Re: the qnub-test

i suppose i should update with mentioning i made a font smaller than qnub.

it is called bf.

it is possible to use it... but be warned...  it is very very small, and may seem rather cryptic at first.

you have been warned.  so dont complain to me when you cant figure out how to change things back because everything's too small.

and check out the others there too.  smile  http://ks392457.kimsufi.com/stuff/dtfc/xfonts/ ("tidyr" is my fave, n gets high praise from others too)
