Well, that sucks, sorry about that. As far as what I was saying, what constitutes as trolling can sometimes be up for debate. In this case, censorship should be used as a highly regulated last resort. The whole game changes once the verbal trolling ends & the hacking begins. Thankfully, we haven't experienced any of that. In that case, though, what can you really do? Exercising your right to free speech & maintaining a free & open society is completely different in those circumstances. When a person is just saying controversial or dumb things, that's one thing, & it calls for a sensitive, cautious response, where the freedom & wellbeing of the community are top priorities. When it goes into hacking accounts & posting things as other users, that causes irreparable damage to the community as a whole, & is just a really awkward, dangerous situation.
In our case the person started out being on topic and behaving very well. He was very articulate and seemed intelligent and very high on knowledge on the topics he was debating. The problem started when the mods found his opinions too extreme for their liking, and started deleting his posts. His opinions was the kind of opinions you would expect from a communist, as he claimed to be. Then it escalated into a war between him and the mods, where he could stay up for days, constantly spamming down the forum while the mods tried to delete and ban to the best of their ability, and he got worse and worse, and it was then he started with the 9/11-conspiracy theories....
So I`m not quite sure if he was a troll, or if he actually belived in the things he claimed and was obsessed by a distorted image of the reality, possibly caused by some sort of psychiatric illness. Another possibility is that he actually was a extreme islamist with an agenda. Who knows. I only know that implementing the necessary means to get rid of him, also killed the forum. It was very few of us who actually had profiles. Most of the users was participating as anoymous users and posters, and when they no longer could participate as such, there was to few of us left to make it interesting.

I installed #! on the day of the DDoS; is the Debian swirl image in the grub boot screen a result of upgrading with the #! repos commented out of my sources list? If so, is there a way to keep it after re-adding the #! repos and upgrading? I like it.
Yes, the backgrounds resides in "/usr/share/images/desktop-base" , and you can set your grub-background in "/usr/share/desktop-base/grub_background.sh", provided you have installed "desktop-base". You can also set your grub-background to any other image located anywhere.... Remember to update grub.
If you don`t have desktop-base installed, you can dump a picture in "/boot/grub", and it should be used as your grub-background. Another option is to "hack" "/etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme to make sure it chooses the image you want. But this requires a little more skill. Not to difficult. If I can do it, most can do it.

Yep, that's hard. Honestly, it's one of those things that I suppose could happen to anyone. The mods didn't like what he said, so they fought back, he wanted revenge (you know what they say about revenge; better dig two graves) & before you know it, everything's gone to hell, & the forum leader(s) had no choice but to play Taps & pull the plug
But on a more positive note, #! doesn't have quite those same circumstances/ stipulations, &, as such, I'm sure these forums will be around for quite a while

Thanks! I did a bit of searching and dumped a .png into /boot/grub and it worked. Now off to find that original image.

It's /usr/share/images/desktop-base/joy-grub.png (I think)

To make it even more dramatic, here's the true story behind that picture:
That is Junior Political Officer Алексей Гордеевич Еременко (Alexei Gordeevich Yeremenko) directing troops in battle in WWII. According to eyewitness accounts, he was killed several minutes after the photo was taken. O:)

Yeah, but that was about 70 years ago & all things considered, he was a Junior Political Officer, so odds are, he wouldn't have survuved the purges. He was just in one of those lose-lose situations. But at least he didn't go quietly, & he has the distinction of being the subject of what is probably one of the best candid photographs of the Red Army in WWII O:)

The first one was resolved too. Is it permanently resolved (like Linode is now protected against DDoS attacks) or the attacker got tired and might strike back?

Could it be permanently resolved?
Highly skeptic.
An attacker could be lurking as we speak (unfortunately)
Let's just enjoy the moment 8)

Eh...so does any individual here have definitive information as to Who (plural, as my own research indicates)?
And Why (my research indicates it to be a target elsewhere with the Crunchbang Repositories being a byproduct of a differing target)?
I always prefer to validate my own research by double checking or even triple checking with information available locally (infer here) as any decent information analysis should to begin with.

I try not to simply "plus-one" a post without adding a comment, even if the comment is redundant.
