I cut my teeth on a Department of Defense network and it's just my personal preference (and DoD directive) but I never use a server's role as part of the server name unless I'm setting up a honeypot  smile

No offense intended at all, but you were a hacker and saw two servers - one named LDS3941 and the other named BigSQLServerThatWillTakeDownTheEntireBusinessIfItFails which one would be the more attractive target?

Security through obscurity is over rated. Most of these devices are all only accessible through a wired connection to the company's intranet anyways, and there's not much of anything that would be of value to someone outside of the organization anyways. If someone decides they want to break into an abnormally well secured network owned by a fortune 500 company just to vandalize someone's excel spreadsheets, they can go ahead.

Security through obscurity *is* overrated; that's not really security through obscurity, though, if it's not a replacement for having actual protection on your server. Security through obscurity is the practice of relying on the lack of knowledge of the holes in your security to protect you. Making it more difficult for attackers to decide where to attack is another layer of security...

I name them after what they are. My desktop is desktop_1 and my notebooks are x61t and aspire6930g.

Keeping it simple.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

For storage devices, I mostly use a certain system, mostly.

My main data partition is "KUPLA" (all caps, translates to bubble). I also have USB sticks named "SILMUKKA" (loop, from Hyperion-series) and LAATIKKO (box) and old hdd named VARASTO (warehouse). I use names of "things you can put stuff inside of", I guess. But the again, most of my devices and other stuff are named for convenience, for example, Linux1, Linux2 and WinXP partitions and ARTUN2 (Arttu's 2) Windos workgroup.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

If my computer case has something written in it, I use that as long as it is not the brand (Sniper is okay but Coolermaster is not).
If not, I use a recent catastrophe or something relevant on the news.

If I had to name a computer now, I'd name it Boston. But recent names I used for drive labels and pcs are:
Armageddon, Maya, Dolphin, Tsunami, etc.

I recommend to avoid using women's names for drive labels, you may be flagged as a stalker.

For custom desktop builds, that seems like an awesome way to name them!  big_smile

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

I used to took names from anime or tokusatsu. My last one was pandy from Dead Leaves. I named my current laptop erigone, because her story was mentioned in one of Roberto Bolaño's book. (one of my favorite writers)

Lame references to the OS:
ArchGeige, DeepBlueScreen, DebbieDoesDodos, CrabApple, BSDM.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

I don't really have a system for my Linux boxes, I usually make those up at install time, but here at work, new workstations are named after dead rock (and other music) stars: Garcia, Cobain, Sinatra, White (Barry), etc.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

I name mine after characters from the book Tintenwelt (Inkheart in English).
The network itself is called Tintenwelt.

The desktop is called Gwyn.
The Elitebook is called Staubfinger.
The Zenbook is currently called deathstar but I'll change that the next time when I reinstall it.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

Desktops are named for something about the box. It's all kind of boring but the naming has a consistancy that I like.

FX-1 my main box, has a big FX graphic on the side.
FG-1 and FG-4 are single and quad core boxes that I got from FreeGeek to fool around with.
LX-1 is a box that I use as a Loaner for when I'm working on someone's rig.

I named my external backup drive and thumb drives for female characters in a TV show. Wanda, Lacey, Karen and Emma.

Re: What System Do You Have For Naming Your Devices?

I use names in Greek Mythology. My desktop is called Cerberus because Cerberus is a multi headed beast and I run multiple OSes on it. My last laptop was named Icarus. I use the latin spellings of the names because I have a thing for latin words (hence my username).

Folg-MD6700 (soon to be mediacenter)
Folg-V4000 (semi-retired laptop)

There are many games as well as other media that use names from Greek Mythology. It's almost impossible to avoid coming across it, but I had studied ancient religions and mythology.

Latin flower or plant names, letters all in lower case: viola, lilium, camelia, coffea ...

The astute reader will have noticed that these are all nice to look at or can be used to make tasty beverages from, respectively.
