Ideas to improve sound quality

Afternoon all,
I have got mpd running on a raspberry pi. On the pi I have put a cheap usb sound card. It is certainly an improvement, but what else is there out there to further improve the quality of the sound. I've been reading about DAC such as the ESI Dr. Dac Nano
http://www.esi-audio.com/products/drdacnano/
and the FiiO E10 Headphone Amplifier
http://www.amazon.co.uk/FiiO-Headphone- … BK41G84MLA
and was wondering if anyone has used these or anything similar and if they would recommend them. Or whether there is something else I could do.
Your thoughts are gratefully appreciated.  smile

Re: Ideas to improve sound quality

Here is how I would list audio components by importance:
Speakers
Amp
DAC
Source files

So first get good speakers, then a nice amp etc. Yes a DAC will make a difference, but it won't make up for poor sounding speakers.

On the software side, I would ignore any kind of EQ or post processing malarky.

Re: Ideas to improve sound quality

Thanks for the replies.
I'm very happy with my speakers, which are powered (ie internal amplifier). I'm not sure how I can improve the variety of mp3, ogg & flac files I have, without ripping or downloading them all again (something for a quiet Sunday methinks smile )
Pulseaudio has been removed, so the only thing left to look at is maybe purchasing a DAC.
I may very well end up doing nothing because I can't really justify spending a lot of money on this if the end quality improvement will only be marginal.
Thoughts?

Re: Ideas to improve sound quality

It's all about the hardware really, though you can improve sound by adjusting speaker placement. Keep them at ear height and away from the corners of the room.

As you keeping trying to improve sound quality you will notice that it takes larger amounts of money to realize small increases in quality. Unfortunately it is for you to decide if the marginal increase in sound quality is worth the price.

You can always post on http://www.head-fi.org/f/ and ask for advice/suggestions.
