Root Password not working anymore

Hi to all, The Waldorf 11 installation is working smoothly, while I am setting up system services ( rsync etc) to start real work.
Unfortunately, I can only login as a user. I tried su root, it does not accept the root passwd anymore. I rebooted and tried pressing e during GRUB, them editing the line starting with linux ... vmliuz etc. adding init=//bin/bash to the end of line, but I couldnt resume boot. Then I simply rebooted in rescue mode and set a new root passwd. It was accepted. Was it just temporary ? In graphic mode, it is rejected. When I try to do su root -> su: Fehler bei Authentifizierung. I cannot open a root terminal etc. the monitor flickers but no window opens, no error message there.
Does root need to be in the sudoers file ? Can someone help me ? I don't want to redo the installation because of this.
System uses xfce4 with #!

Re: Root Password not working anymore

Hi #!-a-roo : I like sudo and it works. But there are tasks that require root rights.

Re: Root Password not working anymore

sudo -i will give you a root console.

Re: Root Password not working anymore

Perhaps your keyboard setting in X is different from the one in console?
The easiest solution is to choose a simple password in recovery mode - like 123456 - without usingthe shift key - then reset the password in an X terminal afterward.

Re: Root Password not working anymore

Thanks, sudo -i gives me a root terminal. This is enough for the job. But in xcfe4 even the simplest 1 character passw does not work. Problem almost solved. Happy easter !

Re: Root Password not working anymore

The way I usually change the password is logging into a root terminal, then using passwd.

sudo -i
passwd
