Excellent, edps! I cheated -- I had Chrome translate the pages, but excellent work!

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

Machinebacon and rhowaldt (I think) and I were discussing this on G+ -- this is a pretty good overview of CrunchBang from Swoops:

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

Interesting review, though he says a lot of nice things -- one of CrunchBang's strengths is that it IS a blank canvas where you can customize it to your liking. However, when he says toward the end (at least I think he said) that it's lightweight just like Ubuntu, I have to wonder about his definition of "lightweight." Also, I have to wonder aloud about the accuracy of reviewing a distro after running it virtually.

May I add my own here, it's wasn't really intended as a full review, more a first impressions, or actually second impressions  cool

Aaaaaaaaand, here's how they voted, with numbers:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/question … age13.html

Not too bad getting nearly 5 percent in a poll of 22 distros. Woo! big_smile

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

In a world dominated by Slackers, CrunchBang is 7th. Not bad at all. Openbox did very well too. I was surprised to see that Trisquel 6 (based on Ubuntu 12.04) did not have Openbox. Is it all evil and proprietary or something?

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

^Trisquel is using Gnome, always has. Not sure why you would think it's proprietary, Trisquel GNU/Linux is one of the few recommended by the FSF.

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

Indeed, that's the point. Trisquel is essentially Ubuntu with the naughty bits removed. Since Openbox isn't in the Trisquel 6 repos, even though it's based on Precise Pangolin, I was left wondering why it was left out of Trisquel. It's a nice Gnome Panel, I was just surprised that the repos offered no alternative DE.

I heartily recommend it, btw. If you can live with the free graphics driver.

Phillip Banks, who is on the SCALE Team, is writing a 20 days of SCALE series in his blog, and day 13 is a review of CrunchBang. It's here:

I haven't had chance to boot it yet and it does not say anything in the magazine.  From the screen shot it looks like Waldorf this time.

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

Found this in my reader this morning.

As the review is really just an install walkthrough, you can get the jist of his thoughts by reading the summary at the end.

Just to make you smile, you should read the first paragraph where he starts by stating that he was initially underwhelmed by #! and then explains that he based his initial judgment on the black background he saw when booting for the first time so he switched immediately to another distro.

Re: CrunchBang reviews and mentions

schwim - Hmmm, interesting review. He says a lot of nice things about CrunchBang and his last paragraph really sums it up nicely.

On something completely unrelated (and to be shamefully self-promoting), I wrote an article on CrunchBang for Ubuntu User Magazine, which is now out on newsstands (sadly, the article is not online). It's Number 16, the edition with Video Pro on the cover.

[I'm going to wait for those who know me well to stop laughing at the mere prospect of my writing an article for Ubuntu User, but as soon as I can find a link, I'll post it.]
