[SOLVED] Sound issue

Hello,

When I watch a movie with VLC, whenever I resume a paused video the sound is muted. I tried with other players, and there the problem doesn't appear. I tried switching between ALSA and Pulseaudio, and it was the same.

What's weird though is that I have another waldorf install on my usb, installed with the same pc, and on there this problem doesn't appear..

Re: [SOLVED] Sound issue

Have you tried

apt-get install vlc-plugin-pulse && apt-get install vlc-plugin-notify

It's a fix I have seen before for this problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Sound issue

Does muted mean that the volume icon gets turned to 'Muted' or does the volume icon actually work but there is no sound coming?

What I always do first (and it works in most cases) is

sudo alsactl init #this resets the sound card
alsamixer #this opens the mixer in terminal

Of course try to install the missing Pulse plugin for VLC before.

Re: [SOLVED] Sound issue

Thank you both, but no, I'm sorry my problem remains.

My explanation was not that very clear.

When I resumed a paused video, the sound for that video doesn't come back on. But for the rest of my system my sound remains (I can open another vlc video, and sound will work just fine).

I can get the sound to work again by fast forwarding the movie a little.

It probably is a vlc issue

Re: [SOLVED] Sound issue

It is a bug alright
but the solution provided by DogMatix should solve it.

I am on 'sid' with vlc version

xaps52@crunchie:~$ vlc --version
VLC version 2.0.4 Twoflower (2.0.3-289-g6e6100a)
Compiled by buildd on murphy.debian.org (Oct 18 2012 18:46:15)
Compiler: gcc version 4.7.2 (Debian 4.7.2-4)
This program comes with NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.

and pulseaudio and I do not have that problem.

Re: [SOLVED] Sound issue

Thank you Xaos, your link to the bug info solved it!

This bug was discussed on our mailing list [1]. The problem was that vlc
was configured to use the alsa output plugin. The solution is to install
vlc-plugin-pulse and to use the Pulseaudio output plugin (Tools ->
Preferences -> Audio -> Output module: Pulseaudio audio output).
