[SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

Edit: I just realized this should be in the unstable Help & Support section. Apologies for that!

Hi Everyone,

I have come for your help once again! Here is the thing : after running #! on my laptop for quite a while now, I have bought a new PC (desktop)  to satisfy my growing video and photography related needs. On my Statler-running laptop, I am connected to the internet via a wired ADSL connection (PPPoE).

After installing Waldorf on my new machine, I entered the same parameters I use for my laptop in nm-applet but I am unable to get connected. Weird isn't it? I get the disconnected message right away - I mean it feels like nm-applet is not even trying to connect - so I guess there might be some kind of driver issue or basic step that I forgot to do...

I have an ASUS mobo (P8H77-v) with a Qualcomm Atheros, 1 x Gigabit LAN Controller on it.  I have no idea what to investigate in the first place to solve this so any pointers will be much appreciated!

I love #! more than my own kids. I told them and they sympathized.

Be excellent to each other!

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

I'm not a network guru at all, but the one suggestion I have till one shows up is: remove the settings you entered in nm-applet, reboot and see if network-manager can figure it out by itself. Maybe what you put in only workd for the laptop.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

@OP
Try installing the 'firmware-atheros' package.
If it does not work, post output of

lspci -knn | grep -EiA3 net
lsmod
dmesg

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

I knew I could count on you guys! Thanks for helping me out!

I tried johnraff's suggestion but it didn't work. Installing the  'firmware-atheros' package didn't work either, so here are the outputs of... ---EDIT:  realized I forgot the output of lsmod, will put in the next post ---

One other info is that if I run nm-tool in a terminal (non-root) it will complain

Running nm-tool as root give the same output without the warning line. This may be normal but I am not sure so I thought I'd mention it.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

Seems it is a recent card. Driver is not included with the kernel you are using.
It is possible to get it working with compat-wireless. See http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-93 … 01bf0c2f6c
Let us know if you need more help.
Good Luck.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

xaos52, thanks a lot! I understand why your title is "the good doctor" now smile I checked the link you provided and did some more searching and that is definitely the problem, as you diagnosed the driver is not included in the kernel yet.
Aaah the joy of linux. And some people wondered why linux is not getting more popular...

Anyway, after downloading the driver, trying to compile, the 'make' command gave me

./scripts/gen-compat-autoconf.sh /home/kiiroitori/tmp/compat-wireless-2012-05-10-p/.config /home/kiiroitori/tmp/compat-wireless-2012-05-10-p/config.mk > include/linux/compat_autoconf.h
make -C /lib/modules/3.2.0-3-amd64/build M=/home/kiiroitori/tmp/compat-wireless-2012-05-10-p modules
make: *** /lib/modules/3.2.0-3-amd64/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2

...which happens because according to that page http://www.jfdesignnet.com/?p=2133 I need the kernel headers to be able to compile the driver. So I switch back to my internet-connected laptop, download the (I guess) relevant headers but it turns out that I am always needing more and more packages to satisfy the previous package depedencies. For reasons I am not going to detail, I can use only one PC at the time so it is quite a hassle to go back and forth to install a new package every time. I stopped when the package installer asked me to install gcc-4.6, which I am sure need again more packages to be installed.

What am I doing wrong here? Am I right in thinking  I need these packages to be installed to compile the driver?

linux-headers-3.2.0-3-common_3.2.23-1_amd64
linux-headers-3.2.0-3-amd64
linux-headers-3.2.0-3-all-amd64

Thanks again guys for your kind help! Without you I'd probably be running windows 7 by now... yikes

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

Well, you cant compile drivers without the compiler tools smile
You can see the dependencies of a package with the command:

apt-cache depends <package-name>

This is what 'apt-cache depends gcc' gives for me - I am on Debian testing for the moment:

gcc
  Depends: cpp
  Depends: gcc-4.7
  Suggests: gcc-multilib
  Suggests: make
  Suggests: manpages-dev
  Suggests: autoconf
  Suggests: automake1.9
  Suggests: libtool
  Suggests: flex
  Suggests: bison
  Suggests: gdb
  Suggests: gcc-doc
|Recommends: libc6-dev
  Recommends: <libc-dev>
    libc6-dev
  Conflicts: gcc-doc

gcc depends on cpp and gcc-4.7

Packages without version numbers are mostly 'metapackages'
cpp is a 'metapackage'. You will need its dependencies too...
And so on, not till infinity though... smile

So, you would need packages gcc, gcc-4.7, cpp, cpp-4.7, ...

The version numbers on Waldorf should be the same, I think.

Hope this helps

Ah... it makes sense! Next time I will try to think a little bit  to avoid embarassment...

Anyway thanks for the detailed explanation. I have used the command you provided (useful!) and downloaded packages to satisfy other packages' dependencies until it seemed ok. Unfortunately I couldn't install some of them as they broke others packages...which is strange because interdependant packages shouldn't be incompatible. Somewhere I must have made a mistake...it gets quite confusing as the numbers of packages increases.

Isn't there another way to get the driver compiled? I thought of using virtualbox but couldn't install it because of some more errors (well, that might be another thread some day hmm ) . I wonder how many people are/will be affected by this issue.

xaos52, thanks again for the kind explanations.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

I dont know about virtualbox. Mine is 10 years old with 512 MB of RAM, so I never even tried. smile
It should be possible to download and install all necessary packages without conflicts, but it is tedious work and error prone, I guess.

Easiest way would be to connect via wired and install necessary packageswith apt-get or aptitude.

Edit: The order in which the packages are installed is important! Install the 'innermost' dependencies first.

Good luck

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

Have you tried:

sudo rfkill unblock all

Edit: Ha, sorry about that, it was my lunchtime and was trying to spread some love in the only way how: giving people the little bit of knowledge about wifi I have. Which, it turns out, is completely unnecessary.

Re: [SOLVED] Can't connect to the internet on new machine

I managed to get it working! big_smile Here is a summary if someone runs into the same problem:

The driver for the internet controller Atheros AR8161 is not yet included in the kernel (3.2.0-3 and lower), meaning you won't get internet access on some recent motherboards carrying the controller (e.g. mine is an ASUS P8H77-V).

The solution is as it is described here to download the "alx" driver source, compile it and install it.  This requires the kernel headers and build tools packages to be installed.
In the current Waldorf install ,the build essential packages are included HOWEVER the gcc package version required (4.6) is different  than the one installed (4.7) and this will prevent you from installing the headers (at least in my case!). So you will need to get the gcc 4.6 and some of its dependencies as well. Go to the debian page (http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/gcc-4.6), get the package for your architecture and the dependencies with a fixed version (e.g. cpp-4.6 and gcc-4.6-base) as the other dependencies are satisfiable since a higher version of the build essential tools is already installed. In total it was something less than 10 packages, if you get stuck here PM me and I will look it up for you.

You should be then able to compile the driver and install it as indicated on the linuxfoundation page. Restart it with

sudo modprobe alx

and your card should be working.

EDIT: The problem below turned out not to be related to the driver, so this thread is solved and the following is not relevant.
Now this is "mostly solved" because (don't know if it's related to the driver or to a different problem) I can't access some webpages (e.g. duckduckgo or the firefox addons pages). It looks similar to a problem that I had previously on my laptop, only this time I couldn't solve it. If anyone has an idea that would be great smile

Thanks to johnraff, d! and special thanks to xaos52 for helping me solving this issue!

I love #! more than my own kids. I told them and they sympathized.
