Welcome to #!
I honestly have no idea how to fix this, but I'll ask the powers-that-be to repost it in the 'support' section.

Create a file named .asondrc in your home folder. Paste this in:
pcm.dsp {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmix"
}
Run
sudo service alsa-utils stop
sudo alsa force-reload
sudo service alsa-utils start
That should be it.

didnt work

Should the name not be .asoundrc.

I think you might have to use something called dmix. I'm not exactly sure how to use it, but it's basically a software mixer. Either that or use PulseAudio.
Check out Musik - an easy-to-use text-to-music converter!

^ el_koraco offered that already with dmix.

edit the file ~/.asoundrc and change it to:
pcm.pulse {
type pulse
}
ctl.pulse {
type pulse
}
pcm.!default {
type pulse
}
ctl.!default {
type pulse
}
then reboot or
sudo service alsa-utils stop
sudo alsa force-reload
sudo service alsa-utils start
and check if pulseaudio is running (pulseaudio -D)

Is there a reason you want to use Amarok including all the KDE-dependencies?

146 packages to be installed for just one app, a hell and that on the poor and little #!.

banshee
clementine
exaile
rhythmbox
these are full-featured players with iPod support. Rhythmbox is rather big, though.
listen
songbird
don't know if they support the iPod
mocp
audacious
deadbeef
mpd (+ncmpcpp/gmpc/sonata/...)
'light-weight' players
I think right now, with Amarok, your pulseaudio doesn't work perfectly because of phonon (in the KDE packages), so it is possible that changing to a non-KDE-player will already solve your playback problem. That's why I asked if you really need the KDE stuff.
