I tried to play a dvd this weekend with no luck. I popped in the dvd and opened up VLC. Then did an open disc, all I got was the orange cone on the screen. the only thing that I saw that was a concern was that the device was listed as /cdrom0 and not dvd. I am kinda limited on my linux know-how, but just thought that looked not right! Any help would be nice.

Just click/check on dvd from this menu or play the dvd directly from your file browser and assure that you have libdvdcss2 from Debian Multimedia installed.
For any reference as you say to be a beginner, take a look here.
Edit: typo

I'm sure you meant to type libdvdcss2 but as busy as you've been answering posts it's easy to see how a typo slipped past.

^ Oops, sure, I meant libdvdcss2 of course.

Thank you. I can not play it from opening up the dvd in the menu. I will check to see if libdvdcss2 is installed. Is that from the package manager by chance?

Yes, look in Synaptics, if you prefer.

Just did, and it was installed. I did a re-install on it. Tried to play dvd by
1)open VLC
2)Media > Open disc
3)Pick my dvd >open
Starts to spin disc, then stops. I will check out the link you sent me and reference that also
Thanks

Strange thing now I noticed is that #! by default can play all the codecs. Maybe you need also the package w32.

Perhaps this can help you find out what the problem is: http://wiki.videolan.org/Documentation: … leshooting

I think that I will download a fresh copy of #! this weekend and do a fresh install. I saved my autostart and conky config files, and that is all I have on my computer that I need. I may have screwed something up on the original install.

Just one thing - is it all DVDs that don't play, or one particular DVD? Have you tried playing a different one? There is a strange permissions thing with DVDs burned with certain software not being able to play on Debian without special settings in /etc/fstab. Here's the line I modified for /dev/scd0 (ie CDs and DVDs) to get a certain DVD to play:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 users,noauto,uid=0,gid=46,mode=0777,dmode=0777,nosuid,noexec 0 0
(the group with id 46 is plugdev) I'm sorry this was a while ago so I can't give you a link to the original discussion, but the terminal gave strange error messages about a (non-existant) owner with a long id number.

^ That is a good point. The OP has to try another DVD or is the actual DVD a burned one, and which program was used? I think there is no need to install the entire system just because of one DVD.

Well, I finally got back to working on this. I got it working! First I installed mplayer, that helped out alot for a few reasons. First, it was run through the terminal only (i did install gui for ease of use later). What that did for me was output the actual error cod that I was getting, I did a search on the web and found this
http://www.squaregoldfish.co.uk/2010/01 … em-behave/
I changed the region from what ever is was set to, and put in Region 1. And it works.

Cool, could you mark this post with [solved] in the title?
VLC can sometimes decode other region DVDs, it can take several minutes to decode though, during which time it might appear to be doing nothing. You can get the output by starting VLC with a terminal and seeing the output in the terminal window.
Sometimes VLC can't decode the disc though, which can be frustrating. The problem with changing your region is that you typically only have a few region sets on a machine, so doing it everytime you want to watch a movie from a different region will not work out well.
Hope that helps for the future.
一期一会 Let it be good.
