.tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

Basically , I hate what they (meaning whoever is in charge of gtk, or gnome, or maybe even both?) have done with how file roller looks. It just looks retarded on an openbox system. I have looked at some possible replacements but I think maybe I will just use cli compression from now on. What I would like to know is, where can I find a config file related to the right click menu regarding compressed files (zip, rar, tar, etc). I have looked at the custom actions in thunar but the (extract here) command is not there, so, It must be somewhere. My idea is that maybe I can right click on a compressed file and extract here would pop open a terminal and use something like gzip2 then close when finished. Thanks.

ps........

Im on Bunsen if need know.

you can try xarchiver, it's much prettier with openbox than file-roller.

Thats what I just now did. Looks much better. But I would still like to know how to do this with terminal. After some reading I found I would have to add my own command to custom actions. Will experemint .

Terminator is acting rude. For testing purpose i put this in thunar's custom actions , terminator -e bzip2 --help, and terminator opens for a split second and closes. Any Ideas why that would happen?

Run the command in a terminal and see any error messages

@OP   Do you have thunar-archive-plugin installed? That should deal with archives in the r-click context menu.

(I haven't found a solution for the terminator problem though...)

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

Yes I do. Im trying to add a custom right click action that will open the terminal and run gzip2 and extract a selected archive file. From what I have been reading it seems that the error I'm getting is specific to terminator. If I use urxvtcd I am able to achive what I want in my test. I really like terminator so I would like to stick with that. I'm still looking for a solution for terminator but so far to no avail.

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

This terminal command works - the file is archived, but the terminator child window closes immediately.

$ ls
settings.cfg
$ terminator -e bzip2 settings.cfg

** (terminator:3128): WARNING **: Binding '<Shift><Control>a' failed!
Unable to bind hide_window key, another instance/window has it.
$ ls
settings.cfg.bz2

Can you just use "bzip2 %f" as the custom command, or do you really need a terminal window open?

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

you could also use unp (cli decompressor < in repos) and urxvt, patched to thunar as (replacing urxvt with terminator also seems to work)

urxvt -e bash -c 'unp %F && (echo "ok"; sleep 1) || (echo "nope"; sleep 10)'

with appearance conditions set to something like

*.zip;*.tar.gz;*.tar.xz

Only did a brief testing, but seems to work.

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

#! gimpbanger, That will work for me but it is nice to see it working. Thanks.  Im kind of taking a likeing to urxvt so I will be experimenting more with it.

I guess this is solved by not using terminator. I like the split window and resizing split window featurs in that program. What a shame.
I've played around with screen and byobu to get something simular but I'm not sure you are able to resize the windows inside the terminal.

#! Red Menace I really dig your theming.

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

The terminal window closes when the command completes. I think this will be the same for most terminal apps.

BTW the name is "damo" tongue

I think terminator lets you keep it open though, in `Preferences > Profiles > Command > Hold the terminal open` (the default is `exit the terminal`)

FWIW, xarchiver is merely a front-end for the various cli archiving utilities in Linux. If you expect it to have some functionality that is not there, best bet is to look at what archiving utilities you have installed.

Re: .tar .zip etc, right click menu help please [Solved]

terminator -e bzip2 --help , Seems that should have done the trick.
terminator -e bash -c 'bzip2 --help %F && (echo "ok"; sleep 1) || (echo "nope"; sleep 10)' , Does the what I had been trying to do.
