crunchbang fortune package ftw!

============================================
repo moved!
new repo: https://github.com/ohnonot/fortune-mod-cbbl
it now combines both crunchbang & bunsenlabs cookies.
============================================

i was thinking to collect pregnant highlights from crunchbang forums (before we all move to bunsenlabs/forums?), and create a fortune package.

let's make some history!

please point me to crunchy bonmots, wisdom & fun here on the forums.

i just created a repository on github and will continue adding to it (or you can do that, i guess opening an issue would be a sufficent way, or even a merge request, if you're fluent in git - which i'm not).

check it out!

If You want to Contribute

- anything goes! Just keep 'em coming, there's no rules to this game!

  • You can post your contribution here, or open an Issue on github, or even send me a pm.

  • You can post the cookie readily formatted, or you can post a link to a thread, maybe explaining a little what you're aiming at

  • the quote/cookie must work out of context, it must be worth reading as it is, without knowing much about crunchbang forums.

  • short conversations are also welcome, not only quotes from indiduals. we need more diversity, right now it's pretty fixated on a few select powerposters.

  • everything can be discussed, content, form... even the rules i just postulated.

this is what we have so far (Sep, 24) - i always add the new ones to the end.

Folded or Not?

Most (old) fortune cookie files are folded to max. 80 chars width; I didn't see much sesne in doing so, but i guess it really depends on how you use them. so, how do you use them? I added a folded version, which one's better?

Re: crunchbang fortune package ftw!

thanks lowrider.
i vaguely remember that... a link to the thread would be good?

i was thinking more of quotes from actual #!forum threads, from the past - what - 6,7 years?
quotes seem to be the most common way of using fortune, but the format allows for almost anything as long as it's plain text, be it just one word, or many sentences.

soon after posting the first one i realized it's going to be uphill work, because it's hard to make keyword searches for bonmots...

You're gonna need more than the 16 default colors if you intend on quoting anything pvsage posted.

either way is fine.
(would that be an "Issue" on github then? maybe someone even wants to collaborate.)

i think i will wait until we have a few quotes before i make the first commit.

thanks lowrider, there's a lot of godamn fun in that thread, let's see how i/we get it into quotable format...
hhh, thanks too.

Here's what i gleaned so far:
#!: "slim ate my music"
corenominal: "As always, there is definitely lots of room for improvement."
Awebb: "Ooh... I fell for a meme :-D"
Awebb: "I'm so meta, even this acronym"

and a new one:
Forthy: "(HoaS previously answered: Not at all but isn't it elegant?) - If you said that out loud in Anthony Head's voice it would be the actual finest reply to anything ever."

should we include the posters' aliases?

is there some sensible way to put it to the vote?
so i can just collect everything that comes in, and then we vote?

That's an easy bate, here's for starters:

Awebb wrote:

Your box will die of kernel cancer!
Command and Conky was the 90's, baby
Hey, you successfully hijacked a thread! And noone sends you death wishs. Is this a nice place to stay or what?
"Hey Awebb, where is your sense of humor?" you can't see it cuz it's cloaked as cynism.
Your innocence and purity almost qualifies you as a sacrafice for the dragon that keeps attacking our village.
Some call it nightly build, others call it mine field.
I wanna be deep without sounding deep. I wanna be like a city pigeon - dirty but able to fly.
I  have to admit that I use Windows boxes when work has to be done quickly. On any linux device, I tend to start tinkering with scripts and software, instead of using the tools I allready know to accomplish my goals.

We have Debian in three flavors: old, rusty and stale.
Three completely distinct sentences in a paragraph, no facts, no conclusions. You are either very good in creating controversy or very bad in trolling.
Nice work. This is why we love Linux. It starts with "I wonder..." and ends with hard work.
I never faked a study about this topic and I never trust a study I didn't fake.
This word "user-friendly" is used so often as if there was any common sense behind it.
[on swearing in code: ] I thought this is about swearing using programming languages. Go fsck yourself.
If you don't mind performance and the lack of elegance, you can pipe your initial commands behind each other.

There's more, and some that ended like this:

Some real gems in there, nore. So many that are laugh-out-loud funny, and they get funnier the second time you read them.

Please open an Issue, or post to this thread if you want to add or change something.

TODO:

right now this is more of an Awebb-appreciation fortune file. We really, really need more cookies.
some sort of voting/polling system? or should we just let it grow and grow?
    debian package.

48944 - talking about the coming of #! 9.10
Yeah, it'll probably be like Woodstock (minus the smell and the dandruff)

48410
Managed to get the Hydroxygen and Black-Gnome icon sets to copulate successfully... was a bit more tedious than I expected.

Happy GNU Year, my crunchies!!
