[ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

An APT Debian repository containing all the Bunsen packages is now online and available to all users.

>>> Click here for configuration instructions <<<

The packages it contains are snapshots from git and not yet official releases. Users who will be using the repository at the time of the official release however will get automatically upgraded to the release version.

Important notice

We have moved to our official bunsenlabs.org domain and thus the repository's URL has changed. From now on, please use the following APT configuration:

deb http://pkg.bunsenlabs.org/debian bunsen-hydrogen main

I'm sorry but you need to rephrase that since I don't understand what you mean. If you are saying that I should upload a whole disk image to the repository: that won't happen, a repo is for packages and not disk images...

I do not understand: disk image.

OH Wait .. you mean ISO ... I think that is too big for twoion's server and may not handle the traffic.

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

Are the meta packages here any different from what I would get if I installed the packages one-by-one from the Jessie repos?

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

^No. The meta-packages are just empty shells that depend on a list of other packages, so by installing one meta you get them all in one go. The packages themselves are the standard Debian ones.

They are meant mainly to make the welcome script and pipe menus easier to code, and especially, simpler to edit the package lists.

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

I did a pseudo mock-up of what the scripts would look like if it installed the packages directly, and you're spot on. It would take a bit of reworking to get them to go through each package and install it.

Then that means -- just thinking ahead here a bit -- that if BunsenLabs were to be considered for a Debian DE, then would be no issues (with recommends, depends, backports, etc) just using the vanilla debian packages?

Also, I can't remember the specifics of the 'depends' specification with .deb packages, but uninstalling one of the 'depended on' packages would not affect the others, correct?

No, the metapackage would be removed and the other packages would then be marked as "orphans" unless they are dependencies of other packages on the system (or unless they are marked as explicitly installed) and would then be flagged for automatic removal.

If `aptitude` is used, the autoremoval is attempted immediately with the default settings, if `apt-get` is used then the packages will just be marked as orphans and will not be removed until `apt-get autoremove` is run.

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

...just to expand a little on HOAS's (as usual) excellent reply...

If the metapackage lists its dependencies as recommends rather than "hard" dependencies, then removing one of them does not cause the metapackage to be removed. If the system is set to install recommends as dependencies, then the whole thing still works as before, but leaving the user freedom to remove unwanted packages. This is the approach we have chosen to follow with BunsenLabs (and what Corenominal did in #! Waldorf). The price is that sometimes an install might bring in unwanted "recommended" packages as dependencies.

This topic was discussed somewhat a while ago: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=39170  There are pros and cons to installing recommends by default, but that's what we eventually decided to do.

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

@twoion This post: http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic. … 10#p435510 reports "cannot be authenticated" warnings with the BL repo packages. I have just confirmed this on a fresh iso install followed by adding the apt-key and sources.list entry per your instructions above.

I don't remember this issue when I first tried it - has something changed?

Weird, I didn't change anything except for having uploaded new packages. I do get "cannot be authenticated" messages now; but only a few packages I updated recently, but not every such package(??). This affects currently: bunsen-common, bunsen-images-{,extra}.

Investigating, something went wrong (but without errors on the build side).

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

The issue has been fixed.

The version numbers may however be in disarray. Please install bunsen-images, bunsen-images-extra and bunsen-common again from the repo *as it is now*.

Many apologies for the inconvenience. At the time of release, upgrading should suffice since all version numbers will get bumped.

I followed the instructions in the first post, and get

E: Failed to fetch http://pkg.2ion.eu/debian/bunsen-hydrogen/bunsen-images_8.0-1.1_all.deb Size mismatch

Same error with --reinstall. Any ideas?

Yes. Things were wrong. Should be fixed now.

The general problem was that an instance of mini-dinstall which generates the Packages index file had been forked to the background and while running messed up all my operations per a regular mini-dinstall invocation -> chaos.

Keep your daemons under control sad

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

I can also confirm that now bunsen-meta-* packages authentication problem seems to be resolved. In already installed BL:

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
...cut...
The following packages will be upgraded:
  bunsen-images bunsen-pipemenus
2 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 4,189 kB of archives.
After this operation, 1,024 B of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]
Get:1 http://pkg.2ion.eu/debian/ bunsen-hydrogen/ bunsen-images 8.0-1.1 [4,172 kB]
Get:2 http://pkg.2ion.eu/debian/ bunsen-hydrogen/ bunsen-pipemenus 8.0-1 [17.0 kB]
Fetched 4,189 kB in 1min 16s (54.8 kB/s)
...cut...

Later today, I will reinstall BL from scratch and let you know how it went.

Thanks twoion.

Re: [ONLINE] BunsenLabs Debian Repository

(1) Solved bl-meta auth/verification: Fresh install of BL (in VBox), followed first post in this topic, and there is no more problems with BL-meta-packages auth/verification! Thanks!

(2) However, there are still similar(?) problems with deb-multimedia packages (please, see scrot below; this is during first bl-welcome run, just after fresh install + adding BL deb repo).
screenshot_2015_07_24_23_18_33.jpg
I mention it here for the record, but this is clearly their (deb-multimedia) problem.

Well, I think it's our problem in fact, and thank you for spotting it.

For some reason, even after sucessfully installing the deb-multimedia-keyring the authorization doesn't "take" right away. If I exit bl-welcome then I can run 'apt-get dist-upgrade' with no problems. The fix I have chosen for the moment is to run 'apt-get update' one more time in the script before dist-upgrade. The warnings no longer appear. This has been applied to bunsen-welcome version 8.0-1.

Meanwhile, workarounds are:
*) Exit bl-welcome and run it again.
*) Just press 'y' in spite of the warnings.
