Screen res set itself to 1024 x 768 and I can't get it back to above t

So I don't remember what my resolution was up untill yesterday, but it was higher than 1024 x 768.

Yesterday the power cord to the monitor (Dell U2312HM) disconnected a few times, I fixed it..watched a movie..shut down the PC.

Today when I opened the PC I've noticed something's off..the resolution, it's down to 1024 x 768 according to xrandr.

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0

I've never used xrandr but when I try to set it to a higher resolution likeso:

xrandr --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080

I get:

xrandr: cannot find mode 1920x1080

I have no idea what to do.

Be excellent to each other!

Post the output of just

xrandr

and the contents of

/var/log/Xorg.0.log

It'll list the video modes X11 is currently recognizing and show us which driver you are using, and if there were any errors.

Re: Screen res set itself to 1024 x 768 and I can't get it back to above t

have you tried the xrandr gui tool? that works with my screen problems most of the time tongue

The command is:

$ arandr

and it's in your default openbox drop down menu "Settings -> Display Settings"

Re: Screen res set itself to 1024 x 768 and I can't get it back to above t

Perhaps your monitor has stopped feeding back the correct EDID block for your desired resolution.

Try this:

Look at the output of:

cvt 1920 1080

This should be something like this:

# 1920x1080 59.96 Hz (CVT 2.07M9) hsync: 67.16 kHz; pclk: 173.00 MHz
Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync

Then use the output to generate a new EDID modeline for your monitor:

xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync

Then add this mode to the output:

xrandr --addmode VGA1 1920x1080_60

Now set the display to this resolution:

xrand --output VGA1 --mode 1920x1080

Does this work?

Good stuff!

The only caveat is that those commands will only affect the current session...

You will have to add the commands to ~/.config/openbox/autostart so they run every time you log in.

If that doesn't work, post back and we'll try to figure out how to use SysVinit boot scripts (that should be "interesting") wink

Or run them in a script called by autostart?
