Hi there folks,
Here's why I'm asking:
From the GIMP website:
Since GIMP is an image manipulation program and not a painting program........
which explains why it sucks like a Hoover vacuum cleaner when I try to use it for basic things, like selections with borders while working on a website.
So I ask those in the know, what paint, graphics, image editing like software that doesn't require a tutorial to do something that should be one-step.
I could begin just installing stuff, but wanted to ask you guys before trying anything new.
Thanks for your time!

Krita (as long as you don't mind pulling in half of KDE...)
EDIT: Mypaint is also excellent.

Haha, I honestly tried my best to use it, but it works terribly for me. I can't get through any operations successfully without it going awry.

Krita is an awesome application, but as HoaS says it pulls in a lot of dependencies. I've never tried Mypaint though

Closest I'd found to an exact match to MS Paint in Debian is KolourPaint (kolourpaint4 in the repos). Like Krita, wants to pull in half of KDE, but haven't found any other Paint clone that comes close.

gimp >> select >> border
not what you are wanting?

I generally use Pinta for basic stuff.
I've made a huge mistake

Hi there folks, and thanks a bunch for all your help.
Of all the suggestions, I ended up going with Pinta. Although it's by no means a superstar, it was the only thing I could find that had recent updates, wasn't geared toward tablets and didn't require an unacceptable(for me) amount of dependencies. The program itself is quite underwhelming but it will do for my needs.
Thanks again!

Need to get 761 kB/7,200 kB of archives.
After this operation, 19.9 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue [Y/n]? n
So I guess the dependencies thing depends on whether you already have Mono or not.

...because it was specifically built for the KDE desktop; apparently it uses elements of KDE for things that many other applications use widget toolkits for. No mono though.

I also like Pinta

I do some professional photo work and when I want something fast and easy, it is Pinta.
It passes the one supreme software test - you do not need to read a manual to use it.

You could also try xpaint.
