Default GUI IRC client: switch from xchat to hexchat

HexChat is an IRC client based on XChat.

HexChat is a graphical IRC client with a GTK+ GUI. Features include Python  (2 and 3) and Perl scripting support, a plugin API, multiple server/channel windows, spell checking, multiple authentication methods including SASL,  and customizable notifications.

xchat has been dead for four years. hexchat is a fork of xchat that is being actively developed. It's full of goodness.

hexchat is going to be available in jessie.

Taking action on this entails: remove the xchat config from bunsen-configs and add a hexchat config.

Re: Default GUI IRC client: switch from xchat to hexchat

I've already dropped the xchat config from bunsen-configs.  tongue
If there's enough demand for an IRC client from BunsenLabs users and hexchat looks like a good candidate then if it gets clearance from The Boss...

IRC...I've never been an IRC type of person, so I have no strong feelings one way or the other on any particular IRC client.  If hexchat is the maintained and spiritual successor of the IRC client in CrunchBang, then it should be the preferred IRC client in BunsenLabs at this time.

Re: Default GUI IRC client: switch from xchat to hexchat

if someone has the knowhow to half-configure weechat with mice support and everything, that could be the secondary irc client (good example of usage is when connected from outside via ssh and would like to use some irc).

I currently use HexChat for the tiny amount of IRC I do, it's a good, simple client.

This makes sense. Let's go with hexchat, at least for now - it's not a huge install, nor really a major problem for users to change to something else.

@twoion - do you use hexchat? You seem pretty busy atm, but could you perhaps put together what might be a reasonable default config file for it?

Re: Default GUI IRC client: switch from xchat to hexchat

I prefer weechat as the client, but I don't know if we should bother messing with making it a secondary IRC client if hexchat is already in.  Also, as far as GUI IRC clients are concerned I throw my hat in with Quassel IRC as it can be used on remote clients.  But perhaps I am too late with my suggestion here.

sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends quassel
...
After this operation, 150 MB of additional disk space will be used.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n]

Yeah, I am not against it so much, I just think it would be great if it supported remote connection like weechat.
