BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Here are some ideas to be going on with. Let us know what you think smile

If you have font suggestions, then make sure that they can be used freely (like Xolonium, which is the one I'm using here)

...and post your own ideas - this is a community effort after all wink

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Liking them. The ones with a dash of color can we get something without pink though? The last one I built based of your prior artwork, I had added a line that goes "A community driven Openbox derivative inspired by Crunchbang and powered by Debian" as a tag line underneath the logo. I'm not sure how the community feels about this, though.

You saved the best till last. smile

Though I feel it's a shame there's no longer an "!" in the bunsen burner like before.  I thought that was a nice homage to #!.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Forgot to add I have also been doing some with a gray about 20% lighter than the background, rather than the white. Im not sure if it's just my mood these days or if it is because I like the fact that I can set some transparency on my terminals without the text bleeding into parts of the background.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Personally I prefer a dash of blue (blue features in the new Debian8 artwork), but that "pink" is straight from the Debian site sad

I liked the bang homage as well wink

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Blue would be nice. Once I get out of this gray mood I've been in, I will probably go back to a blue theme.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

I like the third from top the most! Add some color to the Debian swirl and it'll be perfect.

Are these pixel or vector-based? What font is this? I think we should have at least the foreground as a vector graphic …

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

Notes to damo...

I've been thinking about what the #! "aesthetic" is, mainly why people have gone so nuts for what, IMO (and everyone please forgive me for this, but it's how I feel) is a somewhat crippled OS. By that I mean that Openbox is a PAIN IN THE ASS to configure, with no advantage EXCEPT FOR the right-click menu that I can see over using xfwm4 with compton instead of it's native compositing, and that tint2 is very customizable appearance-wise but not very functional compared even to lxpanel. That said, I think at least 75% of #!'s appeal is...

It's appearance. For some reason, desaturated colors, a fairly bare wallpaper, and a rather unattractive font combination of Andale Mono and Liberation Sans... just works. So I think we should continue with that aesthetic, meaning those fonts where possible, minimal use of color, no clutter anywhere. Thoughts? Would you consider one of those (very plain) fonts for the Logo?

I have a few wallpapers here...

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

My favorite is #2: flame and swirl integrate best with each other and the text, the flame is nicely in balance and the swirl breathes. Swirl and flame would also look nice as a standalone logo.

I'm not in favor of burner shaped letters. Swirl inside flask looks like it's stuck in. (You don't know what youngligs can stuff inside lab glassware.)

I guess using Debian swirl is OK? Is there a laywer in the house?

The pink is good. It breaks the grey. I like number 7.

@hhh - the wallpapers are good. I especially like the blue flame ones. Not sure if Joy/Inksplat from Wheezy are appropriate though.

When I chose Xolonium, I was trying get a plain slab style font with a little bit of character. Unfortunately, my first choice was covered by a license (I work as a graphic designer and had thrown the first very basic concept together at work in like 5 minutes.). So I went out and hunted for one that was similar but had a gpl license. Of course, I'm not set on it. It was just what appealed to my ad designer aesthetic sense at the time.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

If you remove the flame/swirl from 7 and replace it with hhh's discreet blue flame from his wallpapers? That would be a strong look, no?

They're built from "official" Debian wallpapers, that's why included them.

re: svg files, I can vectorize any of these new elements as well.

I quite like that font for the development logo. My thinking is we'll have set elements that anyone can open in GIMP and wallpaper to their heart's content.

Font is Xolonium, as mentioned in the first post.

They are just png's, because that is what I know best and I can work quickly with GIMP. If a design is chosen it could be done as an svg.

Re: BunsenLabs logo - ideas

desktop-base provides all debian theme elements, like wallapapers if you were wondering. The debian swirl is useable outside of debian. It is their internal logos that are copyright protected.

For accuracy, desktop-base doesn't provide any  icon sets except for hi-color, it doesn't provide any window manager themes and there are other theme elements in other packages (Xfce, KDE, LXDE, etc...). The Debian font is a copyrighted font but can be replaced with LaudatioC...

No - go for it. The more ideas the better IMO smile

Is that a typo for "Labs" or "Apps"?
