Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

I have built an automatic shell script that builds Wally from NetInst. Great stuff by the way! I will test it in a VM and report when I find something.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

I've just had some useful feedback from a new member in a PM because he doesn't yet have posting rights on this thread. Thank you!

*) You need to add " contrib non-free" to the deb lines in /etc/apt/sources.list to get the wireless firmware and flashplugin-nonfree

*) There's a bug in /usr/share/tinkerbox/tb-setup so that it runs every time, overwriting your config files. I'll fix that soon. For now, try adding a directory ~/.config/tinkerbox

*) To get a volume control in tint2, add a line '(sleep 2;volumeicon) &' to ~/.config/openbox/autostart

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

@John:  I've had a quick glance-through of your cheat sheet, and it looks pretty good!  One suggestion, though:  It might be better to organize the packages in the first sets of apt-get install stanzas in terms of what they do (e.g., install the file system support packages at the same time as Thunar).  For one thing, it might make it easier to see what we definitely want to keep and what we definitely want to lose.  (I'd recommend giving reiserfs the boot, for example; that file system deserves to rot in prison with its creator, and afaik there are no distros that use it as the default fs anymore.)  I'll have a go at unshuffling the package list after I get a couple hours' sleep.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

So just a short update:

I installed Wally on my Asus EEE 1000 HA. It works just fine so far. I printed out the cheat sheet and entered it manually.

As someone already mentioned, you must add non-free and contrib to the sources.list.

The other thing so far that I have noticed is that I installed with a wired connection and as I installed the network manager software, there is some notification to the extent that something else (I want to say ifupdown) is managing that connection. So once you login and you take a look at your internet notifications in tint, you will find that it says that Ethernet Network is "device not managed," and although you can ostensibly connect with the wireless, I am unable to actually browse anywhere. Perhaps the network manager needs to be given permission to manage the wireless.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

I'm going to give it a shot when I get the chance. I just found out I lost my dad to cancer today so I've been a little shook up and my plan to start another install is derailed a bit. I have the configs for the stuff I have been working on pushed to my github now. Once I get a reasonable block of time to do it, I will compile the suggestions I have been seeing and attempt to streamline one more install. Once I get through that, I believe I can attempt the Live Systems thing. Fortunately, that can all be tested through a VM. Im not sure if it's an unconscious thing or what but the theme I have been working out looks just like the crunchbang forums  lol Anyway, Ill keep you all posted on my progress once the dust settles a bit.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

Well, just because it is easier to use Debian LXDE as base does not mean it is the better idea versus starting from plain netinst.

I mean of course, it is much easier and we might end up adding a big bunch of the same packages. But from a developement side, isn't it better to use a as small as possible base to start with? You might end up spending almost the same time then going through the system and remove packages that you don't need and don't want. Building up from netinst brings you down to the very core features that you need, although you have to experiment a little more.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

@freistil:  I agree that it is better to build a house up from the foundation than to tear down and add walls to change the floor plan, but isoceles seems timid about the build process, and IMHO understandably so; you don't want to accidentally knock out a structural beam or cut through a water pipe.  Also, it sounds like right now he's looking for something that's "close enough" for temporary housing until we've finished drafting our little McMansion.

Re: Wally - a Waldorf replica on a Jessie netinstall

An improvement idea:

Why not place all of these commands in a .sh file, or three.

Automation saves everybodys time. Less copypasting. Put the file in a github.

Ping me if input/help/github needed (c-c at #crunchbang)
