Consider:

versus

Oh, god, I tried to install this distro which is respin of Crunchbang (not the one who was done by simpledesign, nor one called debarchery), and grub installation failed ... bla bla.

Consider also recommending someone to try and test 'this new distro, successor of Crunchbang, but not one done by ...' Well you get the picture  smile

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

But.. until there actually is a new distro, the name is meaningless. This is my point. Do some work on creating something new and don't worry about what it is called until it's born (because what you end up with might not be what you planned at the beginning). Like new parents -- do you name your baby when it is first conceived, or wait until you actually see its tiny little head? ;-)

Or have you heard the expression "put the cart before the horse"?

That's all I got. Carry on worrying about the name for your vaporware. :-)

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

It reminds me of when people start a band, I bet everyone first spends time hacking on a name before they start bashing out some tunes.
I guess that once you have a name then it gives everyone involved something to rally behind.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

On needing a name... seems to me we will be needing a source tracker and issue tracker on github or similar.  And that will require a name.  It would be nice if that name was the product name for consistency and recognition, but at minimum we need a working title.

BTW my son's name was decided well before the day he was born....

(random thought)

As negative as the word vaporware is, is it's a very pleasing word to say, it rolls off the tongue nicely. Not as good as "cellar door" but it's up there.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Heckler was the immediate name that sprung to mind, since that nicely describes Statler and Waldorf. Ideally though I'd like the current name continue since I think that would be the best way to maintain the community as a whole.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

There seems to be two main branches here that I can see. One that is concerned with the distro and one that is concerned with the community.

To this effect I say both are evolving appropriately.

Since @iMBeCil in essence called for it, I would (if put to it) vote for "Obsidian" as it is not only the coolest name that has been proposed, but also a natural evolution of the #! philosophy. It contains neither the capital "C" in the start of the name that I wish for in a DIRECT REPLACEMENT, nor is it able to be represented in two (provocative) symbols, but fuck me if it isn't catchy. Solidify the unknown. Tame that beast. It...it makes me excited to think that, after having crunchbang shepherd me from a beginner to an intermediate, the "distro-formerly-known-as-crunchbang" will push the limits and force me to adapt and learn more and more about the workings of linux. Time to push the envelope. Time to evolve.

Luckily, this is poised to happen.

If @intoCB is right and succeeds in his distro-agnostic forum (regardless of the mis-worded proposition), which is by no means a bad idea, there is poised to be a repository of unequaled knowledge in the linux world targeted at transforming intermediate performers into experts and professionals. This can truly be a success, if debarchery (sans subscript) is to come to fruition.

I went to the gas station to fill up and get some beer today. Moe yelled after me while I was leaving "By the way, I like your hat," -- he was commenting on a pure black cap except for two characters; poised next to each other, a white "#" directly preceding a similarly white "!".

I almost cried.

The existing ideal of #! without a doubt "holds any value" and I for one would love to see it rise from the ashes. What evolution it takes is not up to me, but will be guided by the community. As for me and my (computers) we will serve the crunchbang ideals.

~smacz

I always felt like #! was the cool kids distro.  There was nothing else like it, and the name and symbol are just so fresh and awesome.

Yes there are other distro's that just use openbox like archbang, semplice and gobang.  But #! was the first...

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Obsidian is a great name but...

CrunchBang has been based on stable (and testing). It has never been sid-based. That's fine if you want that but it's creating something new. If you don't create something the same as CrunchBang, the new project will be no different to other distributions inspired by CrunchBang, such as the excellent Semplice. Something that is CrunchBang in all but name has a much better chance of keeping the existing user base.

what is this test?
is hat an acronym for history aptitude test?
thats all I can find

I prefer stable thats why I used #! in the first place
because its tried and true by the many masses

I was thinking about the bird arising from beyond the ashes
phoenix ends with nix so it seems suitable
but what about something like daemonix?
and now all I can think of is asterix and obelix lol
the code names could be of characters from that fictional setting

getafix can patch it

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

After giving it some thought, I feel like:

echo

Would be a fitting name to a spiritual successor.  Like CrunchBang (#!), the name is a throwback to Bash scripting.
It totally passes the "hat test" because it's very easily stylized, I'd imagine.  It's very short, simple, catchy and minimal, and works on a few levels since it has a deeper meaning to it that's a nod to Corenominal's (aaawesome) legacy.
Echo Linux... You know it would get plenty of coincidental web traffic ]:D .
So who else thinks we ought to follow up a Bang with an Echo? tongue
