openbox + conky + debian = ocd
This I like. However, there's already an On-Chip Debugger using that acronym.
If you're dedicated to keeping Openbox as the WM, what about ocde (Openbox Conky Debian Environment)? Or maybe otce (Openbox Tint2 Conky Environment)...apparently that last one is Czech for father, but I'm not sure that would be much of a problem...

what about velos? from <
its velocity+os for speed and the less than operator means min (minimal)
empowering clinical innovation (yeah I did that thing)
but this will be velOS or vel-OS or vel.O.S.
I guess we could add de for debian in there and make devel from development/developer
< develos
hmm it should really start with a v for the < operator though
< can represent a c for crunch¡ as <runch¡ (stylized)

I like Obsidian. So much I made sure the domain name was and would remain available until a name is decided. Granted obsidian.org already has someone parking on it and taking offers, so I just purchased obsidianlinux.com and obsidianlinux.org. These names will be available for the development of a Crunchbang (Debian/OB) derivative if the community so chooses and ownership transfered to an appropriate party once the dust has settled.

RE OCD - nooooooooooooo please:
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Distro - NOT good! OK, that's an opinion!
OBSidian sound awesome though.
KUDOS cpoakes
I was thinking yesterday (if nothing else makes great 'development' names):
OBStable v12
OBTest v13, and
OBSID, as it will always be OBSID.
I was close but that OBSidian sounds so much better. Be it that the new distro to come out of this is Stable, Testing or SID that name fits ... so many have taken #! to Testing and Sid anyway.
@ HELPME - nice idea sad it's used but like the < idea how about a logo: <|> "Less is more"
Quick thought:
EDIT: Now I know damo can do it better!

Strongly agreed on not using OCD or a variant of.
I... ermmm... I can't even post this.
Okay, I will, OBTest is a bit worrisome, but OBSID would probably be the most frightening feminine hygiene project ever.
Something I just now realized, OB(*) may not be the best naming convention (it's a tampon brand).

openbox + sid-debian + dark and shiny => OBSidian.
Absolutely perfect name, imo

Obsidian must be based on sid, not stable. All you have to do is look at recent support requests to see basing a distro on debian stable is a big mistake. Half the threads are "why is package x or kernel y so old, and how do I update it?" and the other half are "how do I upgrade to testing/sid entirely?"
But if I were in charge (and in my mind I already am) it wouldn't be based on Debian at all.

Haha! I just might do that!
@Sector11, no worries, it's not always obvious even with major companies (see iPad for example).
@snowpine, yep, anything with (*)sid(*) in the name should be based on, well, Sid.

Okay this is me getting a bit punchy (I've been keeping weird hours lately) but keeping with the spirit but not the name itself, maybe something like Bunsen Labs as a working title. Obviously we could not use a full character name or image, but the word itself is generic enough to where it *shouldn't* run into issues (I think). I dunno.
If it'd be cool with corenominal since it is reusing a CrunchBang element in the name.
Variant- Bunsen Community Labs Linux. (BCLL)
Edit- shorthand also kind of works as a swap.
CB to BC
(and then whatever comes out release-wise will fall where it may)

OBesity - the light alternative.
Groupbang - the distro to make your mother blush.
Gangbang - once you come for the distro, you can't leave the community.

If you ask me it seems risky to refer to other projects in a name.
If ties you down too much and if those projects become incompatible with your project (either technologically or at the level of values), then it becomes awkward.
Remember Cinnarch? Having to change the name of an established project was an embarrassment.
Far better is the #! approach - a name which expressed a certain design ethic and style.
The genius of #! as a name is that it expressed the hacker ethic, a DIY-nix ethos, simplicity and minimalist style (and a punk cheekiness).
The fact that the name did not state what the project was built from (thank god it wasn't called "buntu bang") enticed people to explore further.
Installing #! for the first time felt like an adventure -and it was.
My advice, for what it is worth, is:
take your time to find a name, do not restrict yourselves by trying to refer to the projects your will utilise and try to find a name which is clever without trying to be clever.
A genius idea will come along sooner or later.

I like Obsidian and Bunsen Labs.
If, instead of a .deb package, we have a tarball (essentially the same thing, just installed by direct extraction) and a build script that consists of "package-installer install package-name-1 package-name-2 yada-yada" (installer dependent only on base distro) it could be Bunsen Burner Build Scripts...or somethin'. I applaud chilli-campari's effort to keep some Muppets reference in the name as an homage.
Of course, while we won't use a name similar to CrunchBang in pronunciation, we will note the (whatever it turns out to be)'s heritage somewhere as "inspired by CrunchBang" in the documentation. That's just the proper thing to do.

Sounds like some kind of social activity.... then why not GangBang? ]:D
Okay, that was a stupid joke, but somebody had to fire it once.

This time a more serious name suggestion: since CrunchBang would never be the same without all the great people on the forums and all online forums are known for using +1 as a sign of agreeing, respect, approval, etc:
+1 Linux or even +1! Linux, abbreviated as +1!
Example:
user1: The new foobar feature on +1! is simply awesome!
user2: +1 for +1!

Clever idea
Or even just +! ? (plus bang )

To all participants: thanks a lot for proposing and discussing names of future spin/distro. You were very creative. But, I think it is time to reach a certain conclusion, so let's say that I will track your suggestions 24 hours more from now, and then I will try to conclude with proposing one final name, or one or two candidates. (I think there is no point to wait for indefinite time ...)
And I would like to propose: name chosen here will be the working name, a name which might or might not be the final name of distro. Why? Well, let's see how it works first ... if it is good enough, let it be.
So, please, suggest another name, argue about existing suggestions ... be creative
As for my favorites ... Obsidian and Bunsen Community Labs Linux (or shorter variant: Bunsen Linux).
@chilicampari: yes I know about 'OB' ... but I think that it is not so awful and not so visible in Obsidian. If I'm wrong, please, let me know.
(Yes, I'm aware that I could make a prover 'survey' with voting, but I don't think it is appropriate.)

Why is everyone so hung up on the name? Call it whatever you like, just make something useful.
