The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

IMHO, it is important to give a name to new spin, and to do it soon. Here is a copy-paste from "Sparkle Dancer"? Nooooo! topic (thanks chilicampari for suggestion to split it here):

iMBeCil wrote:

One serious suggestion for name: if future spin will be based on stable debian, and will be really openbox based ('respinned') ... then simple (and to the point) naming scheme would be OB+'debian-stable-name'. ('OB' being short of OpenBox.)

For example, spin based on Jessie would be called 'OBJessie'. Sid based would be OBSid ... and so on.

And I think that name choosing would be actually at the top of the priorities. Simply because people involved (devs and other) have to have the name they will refer to. Consider it as a test ... I mean, if group of people cannot choose a name and agree to it, then how are they going to collaborate successfully on a large project such as entire distro?

Therefore, one suggestion is OBJessie (if new version will be based on debian jessie).

Any other ideas are welcome, and TBH I expect they will be much better than name above. Please, be creative, and try to avoid be (too) funny and try to avoid inappropriate words ... Let's make a serious name, which we will be proud on later!

EDIT: suggestions so far (roughly in order of appearance):

1) Obsidian Linux
2) [Stable] Redux
3) Janus
4) Syndicate of Incredible Nixers (S.I.N.)
5) communitybang
6) combine
7) Lux
8 ) Ater
9) OBomber
10) OBesity
11) Freedom
12) Cascade Javelin
13) OpenSpace
14) SoCBang
15) Bunsen Community Labs Linux (BCLL) or Bunsen Burner
16) +1! Linux (abbrev.: +1!)
17) +! Linux
18) OBrigadO
19) collective intelligence
20) Heckler
21) a knightly shade of grey
22) combomb
23) yolos
24) cbd
25) grindbang
26) bunch-crunch-bang (BCB)
27) echo
28) BingBang
29) DeuterOS
30) comeback
31) KISSBang
32) X!
33) Minion
34) Minimal Debian
35) CrashBurn
36) Kickback
37) Muntzx
38) Franken Bang
last) OBJessie

EDIT: suggestions will be accepted only for 24 more hours from now.

EDIT2: Final suggestions for working and/or final (re)spin name.

Something I just now realized, OB(*) may not be the best naming convention (it's a tampon brand).

Good idea iMBeCil! Add the -ian from Debian and you have "Obsidian Linux." Works for me! Also, obsidian is dark in color, the dark side is strong...

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Hi Imbecil, agree that names are important.
But, what about LXDE for example? That's also an OB based desktop environment. #! and derivatives don't have a monopoly on openbox.

Things are still pretty chaotic round here, but if a large section of the #! community seem to be coming together around a stable-based #!-like distro, then, sure, choosing a good name is an early priority!

[Stable] Redux?

I'm failing to adequately filling the [Stable] part since we can't use #!, but you see were I'm going.

How about Janus?

1. Because it sounds kinda like "Janice".

2. "In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus (/ˈdʒeɪnəs/; Latin: Ianus, pronounced [ˈjaː.nus]) is the god of beginnings and transitions,[1] and thereby of gates, doors, doorways, passages and endings." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janus

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

I hate to be the one to do this, but to avoid collision, Janus is a film company (sorry).

Edit to add, that's something else to check on too, to see what kind of use a name already has. Some stuff probably isn't important, but some may cause an issue.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Keep 'em coming though. FWIW another project I'm in took about two weeks to name and it ended up as a combo of ideas so this still isn't something that is so rushed as to pick a final name just to have one (which is the flexibility of temporary working names).

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Spins on OB- I like Obsidian for a spin tracking sid btw:

obang (ˈəʊbæŋ)
a Japanese gold coin, rectangular in shape, that is no longer in common usage and is only used as a ceremonial or special contribution

obligato- musical term meaning required in a performance.

obelisk

Oberon- (in medieval folklore) the king of the fairies, husband of Titania

In honor of or French #! friends
objet d'art- a small object considered to be of artistic worth

objet- a decorative object that is meant to be exhibited or open to view

Just a few words starting wirh OB culled from an online dictionary.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

@Chilli: I hadn't thought of that.

But, does it make a difference?
I mean, other distros also have names they share with others. Ubuntu, for example, is also a political party and a soda...

And it's not like the film company actually invented the name... wink

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Thanks for suggestions ... Perhaps it doesn't have to be final name, but a working name ... to begin with something.

@chillicampari: didn't know that (which smiley to put here?)

@snowpine Excellent suggestion. If one asks me, that's perfect. (Or objessian ...)

@johnraff Don't really dig your comment ... Yes I know there are OB distros as well ...

@hinto Nice name, but if new spin is based on OpenBox, then I think it should be made 'selling-point' of the distro, and add it somehow in the name. I mean, how many non-bloat minimalistic openbox debian distros are there? Not many.

@IP It might be only me, but my brain constantly loose letter 'J' from your suggestion ... Although, 'Janice' would be good, too.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

It also doesn't have to be tied to Openbox. Openbox should probably be a primary focus as long as it works, but there are other *boxes and DEs available (for a while there was the xfce version) and keeps future options open. So maybe something idea-based? Ubuntu is actually a really good example of that as is, well, CrunchBang. Something sticky and memorable.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

As for idea-based what really jumps out to me is the word "Community"
A quick check for synonyms turns up the word "Syndicate"
So partly inspired by CBiz babbles and likely a bit out in left field:
Syndicate of Incredible Nixers
Product: S.I.N.
Tagline: Come experience the dark side.

Hm, I was under impression that new spin will more-less feature OpenBox. (To continue #! legacy.) IMHO this would be its main advantage.

But it seems that this yet has to be decided/considered ... Yet another important point to agree on (not in this thread, though).

Ok, time to sleep, for me ... tomorrow I will collect new ideas for name, and update first post.

Re: The End ... The Beginning ... And THE NEW NAME

Boats and ships have been mentioned a couple of times in threads as metaphors, but I think we should think more about the wood and parts and reusing what we have for something more like creating a village. A spin could be part of that (and probably should) but we are not locked into one single thing.

Have a good night's sleep and catch ya later. smile

I think CC may mean that Janus is already a well-known film company worldwide, whereas the Ubuntu political party and cola are relatively unknown outside their local spheres of influence.

@iMBeCil This is basically what I was trying to say, that while openbox is at the centre of #! it's not really the defining feature.

Wow, you could have fooled me. What is it's defining feature, it's greyness?

About Crunchbang wrote:

CrunchBang is a Debian GNU/Linux based distribution offering a great blend of speed, style and substance. Using the nimble Openbox window manager, it is highly customisable and provides a modern, full-featured GNU/Linux system without sacrificing performance.

The primary aim of the CrunchBang project is to produce a stable distribution offering the best possible out-of-the-box Openbox experience. To achieve this goal, CrunchBang pulls many base packages directly from Debian's repositories, which are well-known for providing stable and secure software. Packages from CrunchBang's own repositories are then customised and pinned to the system to produce what is known as the CrunchBang distro.
