Any known issues with Packard Bell iMedia S 2185, AMD E1-2500 APU ?

Hi,
I'm probably buying a Packard Bell iMedia S 2185 desktop - new with no o/s installed with the intention of installing #! Wheezy. My current desktop from a car boot sale for £10 has conked out through old age - it was formerly running XP.

Before I take the plunge I've Googled the machine with various permutations about installing Linux / Debian / Crunchbang but can't see any known issues.

To be on the safe side I thought I'd ask here too if anyone knows of any problems/work arounds for a Packard Bell iMedia S 2185 with AMD E1-2500 APU which has both the graphics card and processor in one chip.

I mainly use machine for internet, docs, emails. Not into gaming or video/photo editing etc.

As ever, thanks in advance for any hints, info tips or advice!

Richard.

Edit: Nevermind. I'm afraid I have no advice. I don't get why a desktop machine is sporting a notebook processor, though... Hope it's worth the cost.

I will never buy another machine with anything other than Intel processor and graphics.

^ I guess, YMMV. Intel graphics are highly praised in Tuxland but they keep breaking the drivers (tearing, tearing, and more tearing - google it if you don't believe me). At least there's no prop drivers to struggle with.

OP: Maybe look if your machine has some sort of Linux cert (RHEL/Ubuntu). If it works with 12.04, it' probably works with #!

Not talking on games here, but general desktop stuff. And that includes documents/websites being unreadable/faded out. At least disabling that horrible UXA helps in some cases (and if you're lucky, Wheezy is too old to have it by default wink )

Here, I've had no issues with radeon graphics so far. But that's board integrated. I don't have an APU, and I'm not terribly familiar with them. In fact, I don't really care for the idea of them at all. I guess they must be selling to some extent, but I wish AMD would place its focus anywhere else.

I hope whatever this is turns out to be worthwhile: http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/a … e-in-2015/

Having said that, that same PB model also seems to be available with an A4-5000? http://www.packardbell.co.uk/pb/en/GB/c … .GEKEK.013

Surely, that would be at least somewhat preferable. Whatever the case, I wish you the best of luck. I've heard mixed things about APU support. On a distro as "stable" as Debian, you'll probably need to do some extra work.

Thanks for the replies. It's a bit difficult to see where the replies go, but I get the feeling that no one is reporting an epic fail with this desktop. There seems to be discussion on other hardware options and people's preferences?
The price (new) is £180, and given a bigger budget I'd go for a higher spec .... as would most people I guess!
Buying from: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/desktop-p … html#cat-0
Anyway it seems the APU is ok with Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/cat … DGraphics/

I'll let you know how it goes!
Thanks again
Richard.

I've just bought one of these after a long Linux hiatus. I'll let you know how it goes with a CB install.
