Because of Hyperthreading. Intel has a feature called Hyperthreading on some of its CPUs that lets them run 2 threads per CPU at once under some conditions. If you ran windows 7 on your computer, it would tell you that you have 4 physical cores and 4 logical cores.

Re: A newbie question! Why a QuadCore PC have 8 cores?

Your Quad core has 8 threads because i7's are hyperthreaded. that's why.

It's still just a quad core though.

Short answer: Because of Hyperthreading. Intel has a feature called Hyperthreading on some of its CPUs that lets them run 2 threads per CPU at once under some conditions. If you ran windows 7 on your computer, it would tell you that you have 4 physical cores and 4 logical cores.

You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading

Sorry about that. I accidentally posted my password in IRC and I had the same password set here so they changed my signature.

Re: A newbie question! Why a QuadCore PC have 8 cores?

Your i7 uses Hyperthreading -- each cores can run 2 "threads" wink

EDIT: Ninja'd -- damn internet connection... hmm

The problem is that if you're new to all this, you often don't know what terms to use in your search.

Thank you, "your" particular attitude is truly appreciated. Thought for a moment, I was reading a Debian thread. Been a long time user of #! and lurker here... As is functionally true with most of life, there's never a stupid question but only overly and overtly arrogant answers.

Again, your response was appreciated.    smile

First off: Welcome to the Darkside.

Next: I see from the other posts you have here that it looks like you are not new to Linux just CrunchBang.  And not only asking questions but sharing results.  Awesome keep it up, we appreciate members like that.

I see nothing wrong with your question.  So I have a one for you.   :)

Does lmsensors see the "8 cores" as well?

Why not pop over to The New Monster Conky Thread and share yours.  :D
