I am so happy! I just messed up my new install of Crunchbang on my Dell3000. Let me explain. I was trying to increase the font size and width of Conky. I set the values very high for the X and Y settings. Then my screen started flickering . I'm in the middle of recording with Audacity and all this stuff is going on. My first reaction? "Hey, this is a great learning experience. Let's see how I do". First thing I did was Ctl Alt F1 to drop into another Desktop or whatever you call it. Now I am in the terminal and I have to get out of this mess.
First thing I did was nano into my autostart file and take Conky out of the equation when rebooting by placing a hash before the conky entry. Second thing I did, I deleted my conkyrc file and than rebooted. Everything is fine and everything was done from the command line!! Not sure if what I did was the correct approach but hey it worked. I was even able to recorver the LP I recorded with Audacity. I am, as they say, one happy camper because I had an opportunity to learn something and make the best of many would call a bad situation.
Sorry for the long description but I just could not contain my excitement and had to post something in this forum.

Maybe you should add "and I solved it!" to the title?

Hey Randy - just start a thread called "Randy's Bork-ups and Great Escapes", like a kind of blog or diary. Then you can just add to it, and I can subscribe and enjoy your contributions!

What a wonderful suggestion. Maybe I could help someone else out this way who is new to Crunchbang and Linux. I still consider myself a newbie. Don't we all to some degree? That's what makes Linux so special I think.

@Randy: Probably the first thing I would have done, once at the TTY, was `sudo killall conky` to, well, kill all instances of Conky. What's important is you kept a level head and got yourself out of the mess, and saw it as a learning experience. Well done!
...and yes, we're all newbies here. Except ChilliCampari - she's totally old school. I'd bet she knows *nix-like operating systems better than corenominal.

Thanks pvsage!!
Nice to hear I am on the right track. I just found it amazing that I actually did it and like you said, maintained my composure. A few months ago I would have done a cold reboot and hope for the best. Even if I had really screwed up everything, worst case I could have always rebooted with my trusty puppy linux CD that has always got me out of tight spots. That's what I love about Linux. There are viable options that can be explored if need be.

Can anybody use this thread?
I mess up my installs quite a lot...
]:D
It could be a (self-)support thread.

I'm in the process of messing up my laptop, by trying to get rid of a persistent default image viewer. Various dotfiles are now winging their way from the cloud so I can reinstate mime files, and see what my default thunar config was!
GO RANDY! I'm right behind you
