Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

@ CSCoder4ever

I doubt it!   8.( 8.(

They don't sell "latam" keyboards here anymore, even though this is "Latin America", just "Spanish" keyboards.  I had a 'techie' in a store tell me "They are the same!"  But of course we all know about 'techies' in computer stores.  I apologize if any are present, you must be an exception - using Linux and all. O:)

The difference may be subtle but they are there and I'm use to them.
With the problems of using credit cards online here - it ain't gonna happen - PLUS rates that are extortion. Why bother?
Official exchange rate today is:
U$1.00 = buy: 8.43 pesos sell: 8.48  OK that's cool right ...
EXCEPT: use a credit card to buy something in U$ and the rates are different: 11.448 pesos. 8.(

And that isn't even touching on Import Tax IF it's allowed into the country.

I'll use this 15 year old keyboard till it dies!

Oh, BTW, those Happy Hacking decks do have mechanical switches, or as I call them "Clikity-Clackers".

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Since I own one: I never fully understood the admiration for Topre. Compared to Cherry MX (especially brown or blue) or Buckling Spring it just doesn't feel good. And the, compared to other keyboards, weird layout doesn't really bring any advantages. I ended up modifying half of the keys software-wise. So.. for me personally: Not worth the expense.

That would be neat, though I think a keycap set would be another good one.  big_smile

or better yet, a #! super keycap to replace that darn Windows logo  lol

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Now using a labtec y-sm46 "standard' keyboard. : http://tekgems.com/images/large/967307-0403-R-box.jpg
But mine is not white anymore, its kind of brownish grey now (lol).

This thread infected me with the 'i need to look in some boxes' syndrome.
Rummaging around i found a keyboard heavy enough to be used as a weapon which i cant even
connect to any computer i have. None of the google images are the same as this one as it is using a 5 pin giant
DIN connector which looks like it could survive a nuclear war or something. Actually the entire keyboard gives
the impression of being made to last forever ; Cherry my 3000 R/M  G81-3000LANBE /00
It feels as if my netbook weighs less then this keyboard. !

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

Is it one of those old PS1 Keyboards? I used to have some of those. I think I still have an adapter that will map it to a PS2 port.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

@exidux:  That sounds like an XT keyboard; you'd actually need an external keyboard controller to connect it to a modern PS2 or USB port.  I'd bet it has the same buckling spring switches as a Model M though.

here are some pictures for fun, click to see the entire image ;

this keyboard confuses me with its mixed age appearance. I just cant place it...
The keyboard must be from the 1990's looking at the super-key...

Cherry MX switches were developed and patented in the early 1980s (U.S. Patent 4,467,160). Cherry switches are the most used

Cherry has been manufacturing keyboards since 1967. The company claims to be the oldest keyboard
manufacturer in the world that is still in business.

It seems i have used control, A, and shift to much as the plastic itself has worn off. The coffee stains are
permanently infused into the plastic... it once was white...

I do not know what happened to them, but once i should have had 486 era keyboards somewhere...

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

@exidux -
I can't tell from the pic if that is PS1 or not. Kinda looks like it, though. They make adapters for those. Also, I would say that it's probably between '95 and '97 vintage. The win logo on the Windows key is the pre-Windows Xp design and most keyboards being made in 1998 had ps2 connectors. It's possible that it's as old as 1994, because I think they started putting the win key on them shortly before they released Window 95, but I might be wrong about that.

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

OK, I know this isn't strictly a support thread but I need help...

I spilled some (sweet, milky) tea on the keyboard of my laptop.
I drained it off immediately & used paper towels & a hairdryer (on cool) for a bit.

It seemed fine but now my return key & right shift key are both feeling "tacky" & "gummy" like there's a sticky residue underneath them.

As a motorcyclist-type person, my first instinct is to use contact cleaner (sparingly) on the keys...
Is this wise?

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

You buy one. that's how. big_smile

Also, @dot|not, I'm curious as to how you clean out your mechs. my method is probably looked down upon, but I usually like to take off all the keycaps, and get the board itself cleaned out with an air compressor. I'm sure canned air would've done the same thing  8o

Re: Keyboard Discussion thread of #!

@CSCoder4ever - no mine is not mechanical, more is the pity. Still, this is one of the few rubber dome type keyboards I would call "nice". Something about this model IBM that feels really good. I have given thought to disassembling it and cleaning, maybe doing a few small customization.
