I've used all the init systems for the most part, netbsd rc, openrc, sysv, upstart, systemd. They've all worked good for me as a desktop user that doesn't use gnome. I like the transparency of netbsd rc the best for customizing scripts but you can really do it with any of em including systemd. One thing I'll say, and this goes back to my days at the Texas Linux fest. Leornart Pottycode seems cool as hell, and practical like Linus. Though they've had their little conflicts. Randall swartz once said he'd hang with Linus hands down versus akward Stallman. I'd say it would probably be true with the Veteran Unix Admins versus Pottering.
It just seems to boil down to generic booting or something that rice's out the kernel best. So it's either the bleeding hearts of POSIX purism or letting the muscle of the kernel do it's work. I'd rather vote for the latter and hang with the more chill of the bunch.
Pack em in snow!

I having only used what comes out of the box on the distros I use(d) and being like sugar in a gas tank at the grass roots level of Linux. I've been basing - forming - opinions on what I read. Started on the fence and moved left and right as things progressed but mainly stayed in the middle.
Your little write up adds some "been there, done that and have the experience to form an opinion based on use", that isn't something I have seen to much of. I agree with Unia and Thank You!

I am calling out eveyone using disparaging terms like lunatic. The CB forum is known for respect and reasoned discussion; let's keep it that way. This is a valid disagreement. Name calling doesn't add anything. Would it help to describe supporters as "a bunch of sheep" or "drinking the kool-aid". No. So cut it out.

OK, sorry guilty as charged.
I meant it as a joke, but clearly my judgement is wrong on this.

... And Ubuntu flat won't run without zeitgeist enabled, regardless what WM/DE you use. ...
Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu don't have zeitgeist.

What do you think about this project? I don't like systemd and I will use this system after wheezy discontinues. Will we have Crunchbang clone without systemd. I mean when Jessie goes to stable.

As their name suggests, these are pills made chiefly from frogs, specifically the extremely poisonous ones that live in the vivarium at Unseen University and handled by the first-year students, so that if they kill one of them, not too much education has been wasted.

IMO it's good that Debian splits over systemd. The more people are upset, the more people will help Linux to get rid of it.

I'm not sure what to think. And while I don't really like systemd, I'm still using Arch since pacman's worth it.
These days I'd rather look into the BSDs, but that's just me.

Time will tell if this is actually a fork or if it going to be yet another vanity re-spin with a few package substitutions and some different artwork. It was born out of anger and frustration but will it have the momentum to keep going once that fades and new challenges appear on the horizon?
Personally, I wish them well as they seem to be earnest about their goals and motivation but I doubt if I will be using their distribution.
Every day I use systems with init, upstart, systemd and, I am sure, many other technologies under the hood which I never see or care about. So long as they work in ways that don't annoy me I am happy to defer to the developers and I am sure that problems, when they occur, will be quickly fixed in such a widely used technology. If not, it's distro-hopping time again and that is never a bad thing.
Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Very agree.
It's like the 'Gnome 3' thing. Some bashing, some forks, and then some people saying "it's not so bad, eventually".
I think it will be the same with systemd.

"it's not so bad, eventually".
Yep, eventually.

I note that "eventually" doesn't mean accepting the original (flawed and restricted) design. Many have accepted/returned to the Gnome 3 ecosystem only after features and configurability of GTK2/Gnome 2 that the original designers told us were "unnecessary" and "poor UI design" actually got restored.

I'm not an expert, but I don't like systemd.
I have been reading a lot about it these days (good and bad reviews) but it seems like a new Microsoft-Windows style for Linux.
And this may seem silly, but I've invested a lot of time learning Linux, especially for its free and modular philosophy.
After try with a lot of different distros I was really happy with debian, but the new news has annoyed me.
I will continue using Wheezy, but let Debian as possible if this does not change.
The trouble is that there are not many options. Maybe Slackware or Gentoo.

@gazpacho, close guess. As stated by Linus Poettering himself, the goal of the future for systemd is to make Linux system management become like Apple OSX.

^ Yes, that's a scary thought. As a long-time Apple and Mac user, I became increasing irritated about how the company and OSX was evolving. Finally, nearly 6 years ago, it drove me to using Linux on a daily basis. When the iMac dies, there'll be no more Apple devices in the house.

This situation leaves me a bit uneasy. I'm sure sooner or later all distros (even Slackware or Gentoo) will end up giving in to systemd.

People ranting about systemd are being shortsighted. Most likely, systemd is not going to take over Linux, it's more likely the next batch of programming hotshots will come up with something better. Distros are going with systemd now because it "does a lot of things right", and it's doing them now. "The boot-up speed-ups are real." I'm quoting Linus at Debconf Portland last summer (18:40 for systemd, 5:30 for the State of the Linus Desktop/packaging for Linux/packaging for Debian, NSFW language in places)...

It is a fairly complex issue and I guess it depends on the concept that you have about Linux. The worst is that from what I have read, and if I am not mistaken, this has divided the community and that's not good.
Of course, How I said on my first message I'm not an expert, but anyway I don't like the philosophy behind systemd. Maybe I need glasses.
