Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

Tracking testing has always been problematic, so much so that Mepis has flip-flopped back and forth with testing/ubuntu (now I think it's still on testing).  FWIW, if you want to roll, siduction/bbq (based on SID) is much easier and more stable (believe it or not).

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

With sid, you pretend you don't have apt-get upgrade and always use apt-get dist-upgrade.
Most everything rolls after that.
Siduction, LinuxBBQ, Simplice all roll as far as I know.
You can also install #!, change the sources to point to SID/unstable and roll it, too.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

My preference would be for Clem and co to package Cinnamon for Debian (Mate is fully in now, I think).

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

So why doesn't LMDE track stable? I would think that the developers could include a special Mint repository if they wanted software that's not available in the default Debian Stable repositories?

For /mua, Cinnamon is a menu that loads 2 seconds to many.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

I don't agree about the "experts" needed for sid.  I started with no experience using sid.  I rolled with the same distro for about 6 years,
sid rolls better than testing. Just ask the maintainers of sid releases.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

Sidebar question, hate to derail thread, but this just came to me...

In my sources.list I upgraded from wheezy to jessie. My sources.list includes 'jessie' and not 'testing' - presumably this means that when jessie goes stable, my system will become debian stable (due to 'jessie' in sources.list) and will no longer rely on testing packages, right?

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

@cloverskull --- yes; the freeze starts early November so you're better off keeping it that way as it's not recommended to track Testing/Unstable just after Jessie moves through to Stable... wink

I can't wait to read comments like "why is software XYZ so old" or "how to update package ABC to latest version" devil

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

^ Yeah, it's getting bad with wheezy at the moment hmm
Debian 8 (& #! Janice) should be fan-bloody-tastic for the first six months or so --- it will certainly blow *buntu out of the weeds big_smile

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

Antix seems to be testing based and Mepis is stable.
I had thought years ago that Mepis switched form Ubuntu to testing, but I can't put my finger on it.
And... LMDE moving to stable is a good thing.

Re: Linux Mint Debian Edition to track Stable

MEPIS 6.0 and 6.5 were based on Ubuntu. They went back to Debian with Mepis 7.

I actually had no problem with the Ubuntu-based releases, but other users were less than thrilled about it, to put things mildly.
