My local brick and mortar computer store has a bunch of second hand Fujitsu E5731 and it struck me one of those would make a nice up-grade for my old folks. Have anyone here tried to install Linux (they come with W7 pre-installed) on a Fujitsu E5731? I have poked around a little on internet but with little luck so far.

I imagine it shouldn't be a problem, get one and try it out!

Might want to look up the specs first to see which firmware you'll need.

Well, this PDF Spec sheet on the Fujitsu E5731 says:
Operating system
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Basic (EM) 32-bit
Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 32-bit
Genuine Windows® 7 Professional 64-bitOperating system compatible
openSUSE Linux
Genuine Windows Vista®
Genuine Windows®
. . so I'm thinking OpenSUSE = Linux - #! = Linux
. . . therefore should be a winner!
EDIT: Just found: BIOS Phoenix 6

Wow, thanks Sector11! I didn't see that yesterday.

Not a problem ... I had some free time and since you said:
I have poked around a little on internet but with little luck so far.
It looked like you were trying .. so a twist to the the old adage: Two heads are better than one.
Two searchers are better than one.
When I saw the spec's I check for the BIOS as well because of the new UEFI stuff.

The graphics are Intel® GMA 4500, which should be fine
The Ethernet is 10/100/1000 MBit/s Intel® 82567 LF, which should be fine
The chipset is Intel® Q43 which also should be fine
Looks like Intel has some tools to help install their drivers now as well:

If #! doesn't work for you, maybe try something like LXLE http://www.lxle.net/download
If you get the version based on Ubuntu 14.04, it will have a newer kernel.
