about
is a new tool which, besides being able to download YouTube videos (either the whole video or just the audio), can also search and play YouTube videos and create local playlists, all from the command line.

a. Apparently it is possible to compile mpv in way that accepts youtube links directly, not working for me.
b. Various youtube_dl > mpv scripts, not working for me.

Does this comply with the Youtube API, or does it circumvent it?

I don't play that kind of hardball; I just wanted to be sure we brought up the issue before one of our hardliners chimed in.

Just tried mps-youtube, looks pure win so far.
As to youtube-dl + mpv, I use a .bashrc function:
yt() {
mpv -quiet $(youtube-dl -g "$1")
}

Re legality, morality etc - if it's in the Debian repos then I guess many intelligent and high-principled people have already been over the issues, and we needn't really go through it all again here.
Still...
The legal aspects of storing media locally vs streaming vary from country to country, but the internet is very widely accessible (I'd like to say universally accessible, but let's not forget countries like China) so software which is legal to use where it was written may not be legal in the country where you live.
Until the Internet Police find a way of monitoring your activity, it's basically up to you and your conscience...
btw there are also YouTube downloader addons available for Firefox on the Mozilla site, so they also have presumably thought this stuff through to some extent.

@johnraff: ...except mps-youtube isn't in the Debian repos; python-pip is, and that is used to install Python scripts from a (hopefully trustworthy) third-party repo.

^ Not in Stable anyway; I'd expect it to be one of the Freeze shakedown casualties, along with Minitube, which was in both Squeeze and Wheezy before their freezes.
