Re: Thunar 1.6.3 in Waldorf - Hackfree approach

Thanks, I was going to upgrade to testing for this and others but this is much simpler thanks.

On the topic of multi-paned file managers take a look at Sunflower-fm its in alpha still and so bugs are to be expected but it seems promising

Re: Thunar 1.6.3 in Waldorf - Hackfree approach

Alad, or someone, I've tried googling for this but can't find it. Can you explain exactly what the "Pin-release: n=xfce-4.10" is saying? Specifically, the "n=[name]" portion. I can't find anything about that option for pin-release. Any idea where I can find the rest of the options available for this?

Thank you Alad
it s work like a charm
i order to not have gvf upgrade with apt-get
run :

sudo apt-get -t xfce-4.10 install thunar tasksel-data thunar-archive-plugin thunar-media-tags-plugin thunar-volman

To prevent gvfs from updating, could you also just run the following before upgrading:

 sudo apt-mark hold gvfs

This should put a hold on the package "gvfs" and prevent it from upgrading until you unhold it:

 sudo apt-mark unhold gvfs

EDIT: Nevermind, just ran that myself and tried an upgrade, it held back everything that gvfs would be used by (basically everything that you want upgraded). In other words, don't listen to my suggestion.

"n=" is not documented in man apt_preferences, I assume it stands for "nick". You can check what's available with apt-cache policy.

Brilliant. Thank you, I had no idea you could print all current pin policies like that.

Re: Thunar 1.6.3 in Waldorf - Hackfree approach

At first I battled many times in order to get thunar updated until I discovered how simple it was thanks to the pinning. I am posting this if anybody needs it or if somebody still can't get thunar to be updated.

1. Edit the sources.list and add the following.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
# Thunar 1.6.3
deb http://main.mepis-deb.org/mepiscr/xfce xfce-4.10 main

2. Close and save (ctrl+x) and edit the apt preferences (pinning).

sudo nano /etc/apt/preferences

Add the following:

Package: *
Pin: release n=xfce-4.10
Pin-Priority: 200

Package: thunar libexo-1-0 libthunarx-2-0 libxfce4ui-1-0 thunar-* exo-utils
Pin: release n=xfce-4.10
Pin-Priority: 1200

Close and save again.

Notice: I didn't change any other priority.. neither the waldorf nor the debian one.

3. Add the apt-keys for the xfce-4.10 repository.

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 14E225A0

4. Update apt.

sudo apt-get update

5. Install thunar and thunar-data.

sudo apt-get install thunar thunar-data

6. Also you should upgrade, as it will upgrade some of the thunar-plugins (volman, tags-plugin etc..).

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

7. Finally kill thunar and done.

killall thunar

Hope this helps somebody.

Regards.

Nope, In your post you're suggesting to upgrade everything from the mepis, in my post I am giving priority only to the thunar packages.

PD: I didn't mean to take any credit on this. I just posted how it worked for me. Ofcouse its based on your post enterly, thats why Im posting it here. Sorry if I offended you.

I originally upgraded to Testing, so I could enjoy a tabbed Thunar amongst other things. But now I never use it - I find it much easier to use multiple windows!

I'd be interested to know how you guys feel about it after using it for a while - TABS or NOTABS?

Yes, It's true. I rarely use the tabs, and I rarely remember thunar even has tem.
