Sector11 wins, and I'm surprised nobody else saw it as immediately obvious.

@chillicampari:  Uncompressed video editing is a great example of a legitimate need for massive storage.  Another example that comes to mind is uncompressed multitrack audio; I understand studio-quality DAW involves quite a lot of data.

REALLY!  What did I win?

A million dollars?   A dollar?   10¢
The right to say I won? lol  lol  lol   Just kidding.

I had an online friend that used to edit videos and music sound tracks for them he had 2 - 1TB drives and wanted more.  So Yea, there are reasons to have that kind of real estate.

I certainly don't need it and even this 500GB HDD is way to much for what I need.

But HDD real estate is like winning a Lotto, for most people their life style will expand to the amount won. big_smile

Or their 'archives' will expand to fill in the empty space.

That's my situation.  Lots of disparate archives that could benefit from consolidation.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

I guess virtual machines also take up a lot of space-
The only time I had my 500GB over 60% was when I had *ugh* Windows and was trying out some Linux distros and not removing them, just right before my switch.
Sorry for looking awkward..

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

@Sector11 Yup, when working with video there's really never enough room. What I end up doing is retiring full drives at the end of a project.

Also, (not storage, but a sidebar) when working off older projects you're still working with multiple master studio tapes. Some have degraded over the years and the timecode track isn't always recoverable while pulling it in which can throw your editor off so you need to rejoin it manually and hope it's seamless. If it was planned ahead the tape break will be at a scene change, if not you just do the best possible.

When sending something to a post-production service you still send drives themselves and hope they make it through the trip. tongue

Edit - yep at pvsage. Audio files are huge too.

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

@Pretty much everyone, Ok, I think I get it. For my day-to-day computing needs, though, such large numbers are beyond the scope of normal thought for me, so when I heard 16TB, my thought was simply "damn, that's a lot! yikes "

Well, from your question I will assume you are not familiar with the term "Brony" smile
But there are many who think the latest incarnation is particularly good, myself included.
In its 4th season and going strong  big_smile

Re: Completely Off Topic Chat

Well I was a brony, mid 2012-late 2013.. that's why I wanted to update my data on the show.
Any major things that happened?

Hm. Well there was this "ponies in socks" fetish before s4 aired.
Also I have rebooted my iPhone more times than my CrunchBang in the same timespan

I sang and danced in a musical yesterday in a local dialect of Japanese... That's off topic.  Now I am tired and sleepy.

Pony mod says "No sticky". tongue  At least not at this point...and if it does get stickied, it won't be for Ponies.

Actually, this season has seen a lot of character development and world building, plus a major season arc.  As for Princess Twilight, that was the focus of one episode long after the season premiere, but she's still mostly the bookworm librarian as before.
