Interesting how the SPAM (I hear you, photonucleon and no sPAm or SpaM either) slows down at this time of day and when I sleep (-3 UTC here) they get busy.  Hmmmmmmmmm...

@CSCoder4ever:  I think the one(s) you reported were either before or after I had posted that; I typically check for reports the other mods got in my absence right after I clear out spam.  The ones I got to were literally minutes old when I cleared them out.

@everyone:  What bobobex said.  We catch the ones we can, but sometimes a stray post may slip past us.

Yes, in the event we can't get liaisons to set up centers in your area, expect a few C130s & an SR-71 to drop boxes of them over major cities & their surrounding suburbs in a Berlin-Airlift-type manner.

Next question: Can anyone spare a couple C130s?

EDIT: @xor: Probable, except the Soviets were still booting from tapes & using pirated Apple DOS when they disbanded. Any networking attack they could've engineered wouldn't have survived the implementation of SSL

i try and report spam when i see it, but this is pretty bad

that and the fact that you have to wait 60 secs between posts EVEN when reporting a post

does the forum have any kind of bot detection when signing up??

those the ones you reported Sector11?

Re: SPAM alert!

I just got in from my day job.  Those spam posts are gone now, as are the later ones.  That was one prolific bot! yikes

CrunchBang has been getting a bit of additional press lately with the launch of that new Linux trade mag we helped kickstart.  That will always bring more eyeballs to the site, but it will also bring more spammers.  I'd compare it to those silly religious tracts you always find in public restrooms.

Re: SPAM alert!

...and another couple of prolific bots...gone. roll

I agree that there shouldn't be a time-based lockout for reporting problem posts.  @corenoominal, is there any way to remove that limit without lifting the lockout for ordinary posts?  Also, I wonder if instead of a minimum wait time between individual posts, it might be possible to set a posts-per-hour restriction instead?  My thinking here is that it takes more than a couple minutes to compose a typical post, but it only takes a few seconds to think "D@mn it, I need to fix that typo...WTF???  I need to wait to fix it??? mad "  A posts-per-hour limit might have a bigger throttling effect on spammers and less of an impact on typical forum members.

Sell cvv with good quality

Provide of CVV and Bank Logins + MSR/ATM Skimmers with good price here.

- US cvv: Visa/Master: $2 - Amex Card/Discover: $4
- UK cvv: Card Random: $5, With D.O.B/With Pin: $13
- CA cvv: $10

Perhaps, it really is time to think about captcha for registration? Would be enough to disable simple bots ... (I mean, at present, it seems to be the simple matter to write a simple script to automate registering to #! forum ...)

Please? 8.(

Re: SPAM alert!

At another forum where I'm an admin, we have Captcha enabled.  Then we added global blocks against domains known to be overrun with spammers like Hotmail.  Our latest efforts involve a "Spamicide" module.  All of these are initially somewhat effective...

Captcha is actually of very limited use these days.  Some bots are tied to "free" warez and pr0n services, and have a steady stream of "real humans" - I use that term loosely - who will eagerly enter the Captcha phrase for them and give them access to register on their target forum, so the pervs can get their free flix...

There is no time limit for editing posts, is there? I've never noticed one, only for making a new post within 60 seconds...

EDIT: edited this one within 60 seconds, it works smile

EDIT 2: yes, no time limits for post reporting might be useful, given the large amount of SPAM we seem to have got recently hmm

This is the first major onslaught we've had here in some time (several months, unless I missed some other major onslaughts that the other mods got to while I was asleep), and it just happens to coincide with the launch of Linux Voice.  Coincidence?  Yeah, gotta be coincidence. #Poe

Re: SPAM alert!

28 emails from #! this morning ... 27 of them: spam - and already cleaned up.  Good job to whoever did it.  I suspect pvsage.  big_smile

I only have "forums" marked to send emails, and the conky threads ... what can I say.  I was thinking of stopping those and just using the "New" (since last on) link but since I can catch a few 'bots' this way, I'll leave it.

I tried last night and reported 8 spam posts ... and realized later that I could probably be classified as a "report spammer" as they were all the same bot and it was pumping out a post a minute  .. if a bot can post a message every 3 seconds - 20 a minute - that's 19 post caught by the 60 second rule - that would be 152 posts in the 8 minute life of that bot that never got here ... that's a good thing.  And if 20 users do the same ...

So a suggestion if not out of place: If you see a mass of posts by the same bot - just report it once!  The Admin/Mods will be banning the bot's account anyway.

====
Does #! use any of these FluxBB Modifications?

As I was doing the list I though, maybe corenominal checked all these ... but just in case.. Am I looking for a response?  Not really, I just wanted to bring them to light ... as I said: in case.  wink
