[SOLVED] Wireless woes

Hello all,

This is a thread about one classic Linux problem. Wireless support.
I have this netbook which supposedly comes with a "Ralink R2870" wireless controller (at least according to Windows)... which seems to be a USB dongle rather than an internal card. Needless to say, I have no dongles and wireless works flawlessly under Windows 7, so I can rule out faulty hardware issues.

With some help from here and here, I managed to compile and install the required drivers. Nothing changed, though. I tried blacklisting rt2800usb, rt2x00lib and rt2x00usb as the first link suggests. I only have half an idea over what I am doing, so I'm not sure I even followed the right path here.

uname -rv output:

3.2.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.2.51-1

lspci -knn | grep -EiA2 net output:

	Kernel driver in use: r8169

dmesg|grep -Ei 'wlan|firmw|dhc' output:

So, is my netbook rubbish or am I just thick (or maybe both). Thanks in advance for any support.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

It doesn't look like the module is loaded.

What is the output of

lsmod | grep rt

It's

rt2870sta 444040 0
iTCO_vendor_support 12632 1 iTCO_wdt
usbcore 104555 6 ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd,usb_storage,uvcvideo,rt2870sta

Although I must say I fiddled a bit with modprobe prior to your answer.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

Well, it does seem to be loaded.

I'd probably consult this debian wheezy documentation since it appears to be more recent than the first link you were using (and is official debian documentation, rather than unofficial ubuntu documentation) and lists your device as supported. It seems to be saying that you should blacklist rt2870sta and use rt2800usb (which is now blacklisted). It also says you should install the firmware-ralink package. If this doesn't deliver the expected results, you can always cross your fingers and upgrade your kernel from backports, hoping something has been fixed since 3.2 was released.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

Following your link instructions,

1. was already there, so no change

2. I had already installed the firmware

3. "Connect the device to the system"... er... nothing to do here.

4. "The rt2800usb kernel module is automatically loaded for supported devices." - Even after rebooting nothing changed, so I blacklisted rt2870sta (only that one, I removed everything else) and manually loaded rt2800usb with modprobe. Now lsmod | grep rt looks like:

rt2800usb 17546 0
rt2x00usb 13422 1 rt2800usb
rt2800lib 43251 1 rt2800usb
rt2x00lib 29259 3 rt2800lib,rt2x00usb,rt2800usb
mac80211 171389 3 rt2x00lib,rt2800lib,rt2x00usb
cfg80211 113445 2 mac80211,rt2x00lib
crc_ccitt 12331 1 rt2800lib
iTCO_vendor_support 12632 1 iTCO_wdt
usbcore 104555 8 ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd,usb_storage,usbhid,uvcvideo,rt2x00usb,rt2800usb

Still, no change with ifconfig output.

The issue with updating the kernel is that I also have an Intel GMA3600 video card. I've heard and experienced horror stories about its compatibility with newer kernels. In fact, it seems to be impossible to compile its drivers under newer versions, and my screen just flickers non-stop, while #! works out of the box in this aspect. For the record, Ubuntu 13.10, which runs on top of 3.11 if I'm not mistaken, offered no solace to my wireless... dongle... card... whatever that is, either. I didn't try that Debian guide, though. I may boot it up from a liveUSB and see what happens, if I can withstand the eye-bleeding flickering issues.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

I'm sorry to hear that.
Is the card showing up in lsusb? Is anything interesting showing up in dmesg?
If you are sure the firmware is up to date and correctly installed, then I'm running dry for suggestions.

The last line should indicate that modprobe did something afterall. Maybe I'm missing something really easy here.

Well we know the Wi-Fi radios are operating via this 8 lines from dmesg

The cfg80211 lines are setting up the Wi-Fi (802.11) radios...
....Checking what part of the world it is operating in (regulatory domain)...so it can assign the right channels at the right frequencies
....Then starting 3 channels in the 2.4 GHz range and 2 channels in the 5 GHz range
....Then the usb thingy that seems to register the generic rt2800 driver

BUT then there ain't no wlan0 assigned that should then enable DHCP to get an IP address...dunno why...

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

You're right. It feels as I'm a step away from solution...

Same behaviour observed under Ubuntu 13.10 liveUSB. I didn't (couldn't) even install the firmware, just went "sudo modprobe rt2800usb": lsusb and dmesg showed the same output.

Re: [SOLVED] Wireless woes

SOLVED:

Googling "148f:7601" helped me shed some light on the drivers needed for this device to run. This is an RT2870 but it is also... an MT7601... Ralink merged with MediaTek last year and this has apparently created quite some confusion on device names, in my opinion. Regardless of that, this guide did the trick without a single hiccup. I was able to compile the drivers (3.0.0.4) just fine. Thank you all for your help!

Just for quick reference:

mkdir ~/MT7601-Driver
cd ~/MT7601-Driver
wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/11876059/DPO_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.4_20130913.tar.gz
(alternatively, http://www.mediatek.com/_en/07_downloads/01-1_windowsDetail.php?sn=5042)
tar xvf DPO_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.4_20130913.tar.gz
cd ~/MT7601-Driver/DPO_MT7601U_LinuxSTA_3.0.0.4_20130913
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe mt7601Usta
