Historical Screenshots (oldest or older, pre-2010)

I just want to see your oldest (or older, say pre-2010) screenshots, the older the better! Unfortunately I'm travelling right know and don't have access to my pre-2012 backups :-(

But bring forth the files!

Custom terminal background? Freely positionable status monitor widgets, indicators and launchers which will be considered when the window manager lays out windows? Fully themable text and graphical shell? Virtual desktops? I love how in the old days both graphical and text shell in Linux/Unix were so obviously superior to a certain OS which enjoyed near complete monopoly status at the time …

Then again, I haven't seen default virtual desktop functioanility in the most recent versions of said OS …

Re: Historical Screenshots (oldest or older, pre-2010)

@twoion, I never saved my screenshots. I just uploaded them to an image hosting site. Sadly, I, and many others, chose ompldr.org back in the day, and that site went the way of the dodo.

I'd never saved a screenshot of my very first desktop, but it would have looked something very much like this on a Mac SE/30.

Very good idea about this thread! I searched a lot for old Linux screenshots on the net but I found nearly zero. neutral

Re: Historical Screenshots (oldest or older, pre-2010)

I think that if you search by the codename of the release, you might have better luck.  I've been able to find screenshots of Debian Buzz, but that's only going back to 1996.

And the future too, notice how when StarTrek DS9 goes into our future, all the fonts are in Chicago.  big_smile

I can't even remember what my first OS looked like. All I know is that it could play Dig-Dug.

Compiz is the window manager, Emerald the decorator and in the top-left corner you see already-cool XFCE panel. Apparently, I was using terminator at the time.

You can always try to run these in a virtual machine like virtualbox to get some screenshots. ]:D

Re: Historical Screenshots (oldest or older, pre-2010)

Through an unrelated matter I discovered this really old screenshot:
light_desktop_01117.jpg

I think it's fascinating to see how it looked then, and how little has actually changed in the last 14 years...

It got me spending an hour or so searching for more old Linux screenshots.

KDE seems to have been a big thing back then:
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Bo … content=99
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Rough?content=94
http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/KwiX?content=50

First post ever on gnome-look:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/BeOS?content=69

Also on linuxquestions they start in 2001, but since they don't host images themselves, most links are dead... on page 3 i started finding the first that still worked:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … #post48848
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions … #post50206

strangely, wherever i looked, they all seem to start cropping up around 2001... why then? what happened in the linux world in 2001?

anyhow, have you got something really old to offer?

actually lowrider beats 2001 by 2 years in post #2 of this thread... 1999... cool...

i also remembered yggdrasil, maybe the first graphical linux distro ever?
on this page you can click through to some shots.
here's one:

that was 1996.
