So, how will you steal x-mas this year?

^ no intentions. it's just not for me.

I am not exactly hating it. It just bugs me that the values I was taught to honor as a child - calm the fuck down, relax, take some time to be with your loved ones, eat more than you can morally justify - are going missing more and more (Sidenote: I am a 90ies kid, so I am not that old even if it sounds like I am.) in exchange for blatant materialism. I mean, I love getting presents as much as every other person does, but I'm a bit sad that presents are the main reason for celebrating christmas these days.

^ well said. i agree with you in most points. looks like x-mas is nothing but just a huge commercial event. that's why it sucks.

I look forward to xmas, because usually a co-worker wants to take time off and needs his shifts covered. So I get double-time for playing with my crunchbang lappy - which I would be doing at home anyway. Everyone's a winner
So why don't a few of us go out for a beer, to celebrate not celebrating xmas ]:D

Hate is a very strong word. Should be used on people/things that really deserve it, like Robert Mugabe, Celine Dion, or the Hallmark channel.
X'mas ain't so bad in that sense. Sure, it's kinda crap being all syrupy and joyous while people are suffering all over the world, but the same could be said about weddings (why don't people have divorce dinners?), birthdays (seriously dude, nobody came for you), baby-showers (seen one little Winston Chruchill, seen em all) and house-warming parties (no, I don't care which Italian did your floor tiles, I came because you said you were serving smoked salmon).
I just take advantage of the holiday. Go to youtube and watch a Charlie Brown special or something.

+1 for Celine Dion, although putting her in the same category as Robert Mugabe is a bit unfair. On Robert Mugabe.
I love Christmas - haterz gonna hate - but think New Year's is really annoying. Christmas at least is about other people.

^ lol. best of new year's eve is watching the fireworks...
i've just made a mental note to send some rockets in the general direction of CD. ]:D

I think this song covers the whole subject pretty well, don't you think?...

Not sure whether starting this kind of thread is active
or passive aggressive.

Seems to me this is the opposite of "ignore" in any case.
As a moderator, I will keep my position on Christmas, and on religion in general, out of this thread.

I don't have strong feelings for or against Christmas. As a kid, Christmas was a materialistic holiday for me. Whether a game console or a Lego set, I always looked forward to presents. The fact that I am an only child and my birthday is close probably didn't help either.
Nowadays, I've stopped asking my parents for gifts and Christmas is more like a second Thanksgiving of sorts.

I can sympathize with some of the people in this thread. Coming out of the desert from work, to a major metroplex really allows you to see stuff from a fresh perspective.. There is clearly an epidemic of materialism and it is not safe to drive around very close to Christmas.
Christmas can be enjoyable though when loved ones will just chill out and hang. When you get loaded on Seasonal brews. Also, when you focus on giving and not what you are getting. Also, enjoying a stay a a four star hotel for close to nothing thanks to hotwire, and since most aren't staying at hotels really makes things fun.

^+1 I agree with those who complain about the commercial excesses of Christmas and the focus on presents. What I enjoy most is being with family and friends, and catching up with old friends, during the holidays. A glass or two of porter and/or a bit of whiskey ain't bad at such times either. ]:D

i started fasting today.
not the muslim or christian way, which just means eating less, but a real fast. no food.
not particularly to make a point against christmas, but because i have days off.
i don't hate christmas, but i hate the hype. everything during the weeks leading up to christmas. the few presents i had to buy i bought already 3 weeks ago so i've been home free since then and secretly grinning at all the other people getting more and more stressed out every day.
at my childhood home, everybody was trying their best to make it a great family day, but most times there were arguments and tension in the end. i'm not missing it.
that said, i've had beautiful and memorable christmas celebrations as an adult, in unconventional places, with unconventional people. but i really dont mind not having it this year.
fasting is great, it's totally healthy.

Launching 4 smaller rockets was my christmas (I live slightly in the future), and I got plenty of the dogs "crying" which could be the new alter-Cesar treatment. So what's wrong with Celine Dion?

I'm as well not a fan of Christmas.
I hate the lights and all the other decoration rubbish, the crowds and the worst part are the singing idiots from the salvation army.
