I find that in the universe I currently live in, energy functions quite normally, at least within the limits of measurement

In mu experience, caffeine does not make energy "function" normally. I'll admit that I'm as dependent on caffeine as the next guy though.
Sleep is essential. So is avoiding "multitasking"; the more things you try to do at once, the less efficiently and effectively you'll do any of them.

Sugar! However, this is not a good combination with a lot of work to do and thus little to no time to also work out....

Caffeine makes me grumpy.
I'm naturally wired as is normally ]:D

I honestly don't know if there is any effective alternative to caffeine. All I can suggest is plan your day and avoid any tasks that would make you sleepy/bored prematurely.

a nice power walk or even running or any active body movement for that matter but something that gets the blood moving so to speak.
obstacles are only in your mind. how you deal with them is what "matters".

Bananas : apparently they contain both simple sugars like sweets/candy (quick hit) and more complex sugars like pasta (slow release).
PS. I don't function normally.

This too. I just started forcing myself to make time for a quick run every day, like I used to do. Feels good!

In addition to sleep and exercise (which will also help form good sleeping habits), drink plenty of water.
But if one has trouble with normal, healthy functioning, one should probably talk to a physician

^ This. Even physicians see other physicians for this; there's an adage among doctors along the lines of "A physicians who treats himself has a fool for a patient."

in addition to general exercise (moving, sweating), yoga (stretching, relaxing). nothing too fancy, sun salutation mainly.
water, both internally and externally.

Most of the essentials have already been stated,
Nevertheless, it doesn't hurt to emphasise on the importance of eating as many fruits and vegetables as you possibly can, getting enough sleep, drinking TONS of water, exercising (moderately).
(coffee is unhealthy and quite addictive)
But, let's not get started with supplements like ginseng, guarana, spirulina and royal jelly. All effective, but they are supposed to supplement a healthy diet with variety.

Most basic, sleep is essential. After that, it's basically all in the mind. You are and can do what you think/believe...of course within physical limits

Running and drinking water are definately not something that gives me energy. On the contrary, it depresses me. What gives me energy, is eating, drinking and doing whatever I like, regardless whether it`s "healthy" or not. Because nothing boost your energy more than a high level of satisfaction. You can run many miles a day, drink water and eat carrots and other food meant for rodents, but if you don`t like it, it will only drain your energy. So do whatever makes you feel happy and satisfied. But if you are morbidly obese, and exhausted just by climbing the 3 steps on your front porch, then you are fooling yourself if you claim that this makes you feel happy and content. So when I say that you should do whatever makes you feel good, then that`s not what I`m talking about. Everything has to be done with a little modesty and dicipline. To much of anything isn`t good for you

The major things:
sleep
proper hydration
sleep
stay occupied: nothing saps energy like boredom
sleep
light exercise
sleep
I also like to get energy by taking glucose, breaking it down into pyruvic acid, breaking that down even more, combining some electrons with NAD+, & pushing H+ ions across membranes. Add some oxygen, & you've got yourself some high energy, caffeine free Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).
Also, sleep

what i wrote was meant as "in addition to that" (what you wrote).
also i agree with the modesty thing. too much yoga, even if it makes you look like adonis, is just another addiction, just like too much food, or too little.
on the other hand addictions are somehow part of me. trying to keep them balanced...
but my experience is, if i don't get that modest daily physical exercise, i go down, down, down.
living in northern europe, i should also mention daylight (guess how i'm feeling this time of the year).
