[SOLVED] Install new beta Scrivener (linux vers) on #!--prob w/libs

Hello,
I'm trying to load the new beta Scrivener, but it requires the 32 bit libraries.  Went looking on CrunchBang and I read that I need ia32-libs.

However, I get the red box on synaptic pm, and at the command line I get

berl@T530-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
[sudo] password for berl:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
berl@T530-Laptop:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
berl@T530-Laptop:~$ man dpkg
berl@T530-Laptop:~$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
berl@T530-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

Closed out of everything but a teminal and tried again:

berl@T530-Laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ia32-libs : Depends: ia32-libs-i386 but it is not installable

Am I okay or is this a lost cause?  Any help would be great. Thanks! Kim

FWIW, got it installed (Scrivener) on my old T42 laptop with no problems, but sure would like to run it on my T530 (64bit)....

Will the "ia32-libs-i386 not installable" only make trouble for me?  Can it be fixed? smile Kim

Re: [SOLVED] Install new beta Scrivener (linux vers) on #!--prob w/libs

Krunchtime, thanks.  I think I was just a blockhead and forgot to "apt-get update" after adding the architecture i386.

Scrivener is, yes, first a Mac app, and also a Windows app.  However, they're trying to port it to Linux.  Their beta version is up to 1.6.1.1, just released in Nov.  And yes, I downloaded the .deb package.

However, even after the wise suggestion to run apt-get update, I'm still getting an error about a missing library:

berl@T530-Laptop:~$ scrivener
/usr/share/scrivener/bin/Scrivener: error while loading shared libraries: libgio-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
berl@T530-Laptop:~$

I went to the /usr/share/scrivener/bin/Scrivener directory and there's no libgio-2.0.so.0.

I posted to L&L forum as well, and am awaiting a response.

Someone on Literatureandlatte found out that you can't load Scrivener on a 64bit Ubuntu 13.10 unless you just did an upgrade from 12.whatever and not a fresh install of 13.10.  why that would matter, I have no idea.

And I'm not about to reload a 32bit version of Linux on this laptop, just to get Scrivener running.

This appears not to be the greatest port in the world.  But others on other Linux versions (64?) have been able to install it just fine.

Kim

FYI, thanks for the link to Wheezy.  I went back and deleted all of ia32-libs and re-ran the architecture i386, and updated, just in case but it still gives me the same error.

Re: [SOLVED] Install new beta Scrivener (linux vers) on #!--prob w/libs

UPDATE:  I found the lib file in question under /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.   I suspect their paths in their script isn't looking there for this file.

Maybe you could create a sym link in the folder the script is looking in to the actual file on your box?

Nice to hear they're trying to port their app to Linux.  I hope you're able to get it installed on your computer.

Re: [SOLVED] Install new beta Scrivener (linux vers) on #!--prob w/libs

Hey Die Hard, I just keep loadin' and loadin' but I can't get this thing to workin'....

All I'm accomplishing is filling up my machine with crapola that I'll never need.

I "fixed" the first error (missing libgio-2.0.so.0 ) only to run into another another missing library file.  Seems that in addition to adding the ia32-libs thru "dpkg --add-architecture i386" (forced or otherwise), you're still missing the libgio file so you have to install the ia32-gtk stuff to get that file.  You don't have to make a symbolic link as the binary looks for it under i386_linux-gnu directory as it should.

However, now I'm missing libgstapp-0.10.so.0 for the 32 bit arch.  I have it for the 64 bit arch, under /usr/lib/x86_linux-gnu.

So somehow I have to find the streamer-plugins for 32 bit and install.

Kim
PS:  This is nuts.

Gdebi is my favorite program for installing Deb files.  It's good to see someone else using it as well.
